Help! Should my next SL be a 600 Bi Turbo?

I agree with Stumpy, those two issues are very minor but if you didn't quite feel the love, it's a waste of energy contemplating it.

I also prefer the R230, the proportions are perfect to my limited eyes...

A bit more to add about the wheels - these do go milky seemingly at will and MB are inconsistent with their goodwill on replacing them. As a second or third owner you can imagine the new owner saying 'nah, leave it' when faced with a (I'm guessing 1000 per wheel replacement cost). It goes back to what I said earlier - this was 100k new and just because it is 30k now doesn't mean the parts are any less expensive, and they tend to be bought by people who can't truly afford to run them.

The people who can lavish '000s cherishing their cars tend to have newer ones anyway. Yes I'm generalising but you get my point.

Good luck in your search. I'll be [slightly] jealously following this thread :)

I would, if I were you still go for an R230 65 or a 2007 on 55. But if it were my money I wouldn't have either.

What is an "AMG Performance Pack"?

No image available, but does a 2008 Black SL63 interest you?

Approved Used 2008 MERCEDES-BENZ SL63 AMG for sale

Excellent find!

Yes, this is of interest!.

It seems to be at a "Full" price, and as we head towards winter I was hoping that the prices would 'soften' a tad.

But I notice it had Distronic Cruise Control, which is an attractive option for someone like myself who's legs find walking difficult.

I have 'Distronic' -adaptive cruise- on my Volvo XC60, and its a boon for me!

It also has an 'AMG Performance Pack' I see.

What is an "AMG Performance Pack"? and does it include even firmer suspension than a normal AMG?

By a stroke of luck I will be heading towards Basingstoke tomorrow, Tuesday, to speak with the guys at Comand Online, in Lightwater (J3 M3), so I'll call MB Basingstoke and ask if I can pop by.

Well spotted :thumb:

Thanks again :-)

Robert

I think you have put your finger on it!

I left the dealership still wondering whether I could live with Iridium Silver, because -for my taste- it's a tad too light.

So I thought to myself "You are spending a shed load of money, if there is a doubt or some hesitation, DON'T buy it, WAIT, another will come along in due course."

Basically, I didn't get remotely excited at the prospect of owning this SL, and I think that that fact alone makes the decision for me! (I didn't "Feel the love")!

Hey-ho, on to the next one!

Cheers,
Robert

PS. If I could find a facelift 07 or 08 SL55 I'd jump at it! The square headlights of the younger incarnation have never 'wowed' me.

At that budget, not much to compete with the performance. The 230 has rather a lot of fairly common issues that would take the shine off the overall package for me. After all, being able to get to 60 in 4 secs only appeals so much. The roof rattles, rattles from the tank, dodgy struts, leaky boot, SAM this and that would soon irritate to the point of frustration. I'd buy a mint 129 for 10k and bank the rest, or increase budget to 60k and have some fun.

I agree with buying a newer car than you already have, it makes perfect sense. I understand the reasoning for not going V12 too - we all want to see more of them on the road and as part of our MBClub fold (without sharing your bills though lol) but before you pull the trigger on the 63, I would check the costs associated with running one, especially the brake discs. I think there's a world of difference in cost between E55 and E63 brakes which might be applicable to SLs as well.

Lastly, I bought my CL55 from Quirks Car Company and can vouch for them. As part of the deal I insisted on a MB service to keep FMBSH (as opposed to their own stamp) and it was done. The guys were also flexible and reasonable enough when I pointed to a few things that were not up to scratch - it reflected in the final price I paid.

Agreed..as DS has already said, I think the price is a tad high, but there's always a deal to be had especially this time of year heading towards Xmas:thumb:

That is lovely. Unusually well prepped for a MB dealers car as well!

This is a great car, its not cheap but will be one of the last made and comes with a Tier 1 warranty - I would have it over a SL63 in a heartbeat (love the colour)

I saw this one come up on Autotrader and thought "Wow, great colour".
However, sadly, I have an allergic reaction to Beige interiors. I come out in nasty spots and a red rash, so I could not even consider it ;)

Cheers,
Robert

I have the light leather, but dark wood trim in mine, and love it. Had black leather in the last car, and wanted something bright this time around.

Another vote here for the SL55 R230. SL63 is rather nice though :)

I bought it this afternoon :bannana:

It turned out to be a really nice example of a low mileage SL63.

I love black as a colour and the black leather interior works really well too.

It has my favourite twin spoke wheels (rather than the triple spokes), it has Distronic - which is good for my dodgy legs on long journeys, it even has the 'Performance Pack' (Not that I care), plus a 12 mth MB warranty & 12 mths tax (£495), and a Harman Kardon sound system.

It was fun to drive and I cut (what I thought) was a pretty fair deal on it, not after picking up my "'I-could-buy-it-NOW' Debit Card" and heading for the door (!)

I got what I wanted for my SL350 plus £2,500 off what they were asking. Not a 'bargain', but not over priced from what I have seen each day for the last 4 weeks.

I'm dead chuffed ("Got the Love"), so it's a good outcome for me.

MB are going to refurbish the 4 diamond cut wheels, and this gives me an opportunity to dictate a colour scheme if I want. I was also thinking or (wait for it....) metallic orange brake callipers!

Here is a photo of some orange callipers, albeit with satin black wheel rims (they are possible if I want!). I have to say I think the callipers look awesome. But there again I never was much good at colour schemes.

So here's an opportunity to change the wheels and/or callipers if I want.

Suggestions and comments anyone? How radical can you be?

(I might add that the wheels are on MB, but the callipers would be down to me, say £400). (New wheel bolts too, by the look of them!).

Cheers,
Robert

PS. "Thank You" to AMGeed for spotting the car :-)

I was offered a "StarGard" protection system for the car, prior to it being collected. £499, inside and out.

Can anyone recommend this "StarGard" or is it a total waste of money?

Thanks,
Robert
