Home NAS setup

Looks nice.

As far as I can tell not all NAS devices are DLNA compliant. So if you want to stream media you'll need to look out for that acronym.

HTTP is also nice to have if you want to access your files remotely.

Personally I wouldn't burn data to a CD/DVD for long term storage as I don't think it's stable enough.

Similarly, prints (particularly inkjet) fade.
How would you store data/photo's?

Another question -
One of our pc's runs Vista 64 bit
I note that for Win 7 they quote compatibility for both 32 & 64 bit. For Vista they do not specify.
Any ideas or do I need to contact Buffalo?

Plenty of reading there!
A job for tomorrow.

As the NAS is a network device, if you can use the PC across the network (i.e. to talk to the router for internet access, etc.) you shouldn't have any problems.

Cheers,

I've read loads now.
The Storage appliances | Reviews | PC Pro show there are differences between the gear.
I'm now drawn to something better than the Buffalo 1TB LINKSTATION DUO RAID0/1 (LS-WX1.0TL/R1-E) - dabs.com I looked at before, possibly the single disc Buffalo LinkStation Pro 1.0TB DLNA NAS (LS-XH1.0TL) - dabs.com or the Synology DS-210j.

Bearing in mind that I currently back up from time to time to CD-R's or USB sticks, anything is going to be an improvement.
Just don't know how far to go and what to spend.

I'm with you Piff. I'm unsure of the benefit of having a RAID 1 backup. Why spend more than you have to. The Buffalo Linkstation Pro looks decent to me, having DLNA.

The only thiong stopping my from buying it is that the old one still works, though very nosily! Life on the edge.....

Foillowed this thread with interest and about to buy a Seagate BlackArmor NAS device as it gets good reviews but, more importantly, has encryption built in which is essential for the use I'm putting it to.

Well, after the talk earlier in the year, nothing happened - no action taken.
Yesterday evening, switched the pc on - didn't start.
Many attempts later still nothing.
Swopped the hard disk from another pc & it then starts - so hard disc failure.
Have I got a back up? What do you think - I feel a right tit now!
Have taken it today to a local specialist for data recovery and they can't do it as it is a "mechanical" failure.
It's with another local data recovery man at the moment but I don't hold out a lot of hope. It looks like it's got to go somewhere like this at a cost of about £200.
Needless to say, I've ordered a new hard disk and a Buffalo LinkStation Pro 1.0TB DLNA NAS (LS-XH1.0TL)
