There are some other problems with hydrogen.
Zee Germans were forced to use Hydrogen as America (the single largest producer of Helium) had placed an embargo on Helium sales to the fatherland, the safe and obvious choice for airships. This left zee Germans with the choice of constructing their own Helium production facility or filling the balloons with hydrogen at a far reduced cost. Seeing as these were fundamentally commercial (albeit luxury) services, cost won over safety.
