How do you change the alternator

Hi all,

Using the car yesterday, all the warning messages started to come on one by one (ABS, BAS, ESP, SRS)

I stopped the car and it would be start again. Checked voltage over the next 30 minutes and it was showing 9.7 to 10.7v. Now towed the car home.

The RAC and I guessed that the alternator is bad, car has now done 130k and 6 years old.

Would anyone kindly advise or instruction on how to take the alternator out of the car (W220 diesel)?

Also, MB wants £506 for the alternator and my local factor would do a Valeo for £380. Can anyone suggest who in central/east London can rewind a alternator at a lower price?

Thank you very much in advance.

Thats seems a lot of money for an alternator, remove it and get it tested and repaired, should come with a 12month garauntee, last one i had done on my old disco cost £80.

Unless its one of them watercooled ones?

Just looked on rusky site and they reckon its an 190amp unit thats a seriously powerful alternator!

Its normally the voltage regulator that fails due to age on these, voltage regulators are btw £50.- £100. insist the electrician checks this first,

good luck

europarts aprox £310 for new alternator

Unfortunately it is a water-cooled one :(.

My local motor factor actually has an alternator for the 648 engine on the shelf (exchange from previously refurbished one) for £93 which is about what I expect to repair/rewind my own alternator for.

How can I check the voltage regulator?

What does Mercedes call the voltage regulator? I cannot find it on the russian site.

Thanks, G

It is a tight job to remove one. There is also a seal you have to buy that seals the alternator to the block. It is easy to damage the seal while installing.

Is the battery def a good one?

Thanks Olly about the tip on the seal.

RAC and I has potentially ruled out the battery because 1) the electronics started to die one by one when driving and 2) the car started and worked fine when the RAC power pack was connected to the car (we have to move the car to another location so it can be loaded on to a low loader). Voltage showed 10.7v without power pack and engine off, 11.8v with power pack and engine on.

We thought normally a car runs on the alternator and the battery doesn't contribute. Is this correct?

Could it be the battery or voltage regulator?

I am not sure but I dont thing the reg is available separatly. I think it looks like a charging problem = duff alternator/regulator

Thanks Olly, how much would you charge for a change on a W220 diesel?

Regulator is available from Bosche. Changed one the other week.
