HOW TO - Fit aftermarket parking sensors (rear) with display

But surely you can't run the front unit from a reverse supply, as you want them to work when you're going forward slowly.......................

From what I read you put a relay on the reverse signal so the front sensors/kit are engaged when reverse is DE-selected.

I looked into doing this for the SEC, they are on ebay for roughly £20 and I thought what the hell, was also interested in the front and rear setup from 1 display, I have a box of relays from a Ford if these are any help to anybody, see the classifieds ads for pics, im not selling BTW just dont want them to go to waste, if anybody wants to do a general wiring diagram that would be great or does it come with decent instructions, I am a CAD jockey if somebody wants to turn a paper wiring diagram into a slightly easier one.........

I suppose you could do that but they would be live all the time I guess.

What would be ideal would be if you could tap into the CANBUS signal that operates the automatic door locking so they were only live at low speeds. Any electronic experts out there.................?

No the relay I saw engages the front sensors etc for 30 seconds then turns off. That ought to be enough and much less messing around needed.

Front sensors? what's all this talk about front sensors? Surely you can just look where you are going? OK the same could be said for reversing but the boot gets in the way a bit. You can buy a 10 sensors system (6 front + 4 rear) that has just one display. Why not just get one of those?

As for my car, it's an 02 C class 203 220CDi. Would still like any advcie on locating reverse wire at front end.

R2e,

I have what looks like a very similar headunit for the monitor part of the head unit and two sensors that I was going to fit to my ML (in the blanks that the spare wheel holder would go) Only went for two as the back it pretty much the back but so I can get it very close in garage etc.

Anyway kit has control box with a red and a black wire. Black is earth and the red goes to the reversing light.

The sensors then plug into the control box using little muti connectors and the display also plugs in.

My question

I am a little confused only have two wire (a black for earth and red for reversing sensor) is it the reversing lights currently that power it all.

Also whats the relay and where do I put that, will I have a bulb out warning if I don't?

Thanks in advance

Fairly simple - I would suggest using the relay as bulb out warning is a possibility and it is simple to fit. The relay has a live feed, a trigger feed to the reverse light and the switched live feed to the control box (connects to the red wire that goes to the control box that would otherwise go to the reverse light (if that makes sense  )

Front and rear system here

looks like you have to stop then crawl forward to get the system activated when going forwards, pity it doesnt come from the wheel sensors and come on under 10MPH or whatever it is like the factory fit set

or you could go the whole hog and get a camera

The front sensors on my BMW are activated when reverse is selected so they give information when you are manoovering back and forth into a tight spot. The system can also be activated manually if you need the front sensors and you are not selecting reverse gear, its a great system and shows a picture of the car with coloured waves around it showing the proximity of objects.

My factory fitted parktronic engages the front sensors when in drive, and both front and back sensors when in reverse.

Makes sense too, as when you reverse into a space, you do need to keep the front corners away from cars parked in front, or from walls etc.

Hi All after reading this post...I brought a set of parking sensors...built up the courage to take my car to bits and finally fitted them....they work and look great
if anyone is thinking of doing this mod..go for it...

cheers to R2e for this post...

this is the first time i have ever attempted any work on a car
and i am glad i did....now.... what can i do next......

Hello,

Wose bit for me was the drilling the car...but it all went well.

Have to say they work great and it's nice to have them on the bus...

Could you please give me more details R2e how to remove the side rear strip ( mine is a w203 2006 sport edition ).
I had a go with caution but a bit efraid to damage something, I belive according to your instruction to remove the screw under the wheel arche is the one to use a tork 20.?
Then I tried to use a metal mesuring rod to unclip the strip, do you start from the bottom of he strip or the top?
Please advise

Hi all, very useful info here, specially now that I ordered a kit of reverse sensors for my '04 w203. I haven't disassembled anything yet but my biggest concern is being able to identify the reverse light wire :( Can anyone help on this please, ormknow the colour on the W203?

Thanks to all for your patience :)
