How to: Fit an facelift rear bumper onto a pre-facelift w202 C-Class.
Time taken 30-45 Mins
Parts required:
-A set of facelift rear bumper clamps (£15ish from Mercman)
Tools required:
-10mm & 13mm Sockets
-Pair of pilers
-Another person (Ideally)
1. Clear your boot of all junk, remove bootcarpet and pull out the furry boot trim from bothsides of the car.
2. Locate the 2 bolts on each side of the crossmember, these are just under the rear light cluster and out slightly: (Lucky me, I have a patch of rust by mine)
3. Unscrew them (Including the washers - keep them safe!)
4. Locate the centre Bolt that is located behide a small plastic cover just above when the bootcarpet handle normally is, open this up and unscrew the bolt taking care not to lose the nut & washer into the abyss - (use a pair of pilers when removing it from the end of the thread)
5.With all bolts remove, head over to the rear wheelarches where the bumper joins the plastic liners, pull these over the bumper to enable easy remove of the bumper.
6. Ideally with another person carfully unhook each side and when you have enough gap visible, pull from the centre bolt position until its free of the car and it looks like this:
7. Once the old bumper is gone, start removing the old retaining clamps from each side, to do this you will need to unscrew the bolts with a 10mm socket (1 each side)
8. Fit your new ones to match the position of the old ones.
9. Now your ready to fit the new facelift bumper, again I recommend you get some help with this, otherwise your likely to drop one side scratching it on the floor, if you have no mates willing to help, place a few towels in the area behide each wheel to avoid damaging your new bumpers.
When sliding the bumper onto the rails Make sure both the top rail, and the bottom rails fit snug, otherwise you will have to repeat the process again.
When on as far as you can get it, give it a heavy push from the centre and it should 'clunk' into position.
10. Reverse the process when tightening the bolts back into position etc etc...
11. Look amazed as your car looks 5 years younger!
Notes: I discovered after a long drive that the exhaust pipe had melted a small section of the bumper as its located slightly to close to the bumper, this hasnt got any worst after a few 100miles - no doubt the facelift exhaust is better suited with this.
