thanks all for the input in this subject, finally I got round to doing this job on my pre-facelift. I can confirm there is not easy way on pre FL W124! Whole assembly must be removed in order to remove the cover. took some pics along the way, have a look there:

also note that by removing top cover on newer cars, you have no access to round bit where the gears are and there was a lot of old, hardened grease, it would be good to get this done if yours is a keeper. the job took me about 1:45-2 hrs using one of the pdf's attached earlier.
