HOWTO: Rear Door Card Removal - Facelift W202

With reference to my previous post on this subject ( HOWTO: W202 facelift front inner door panel removal ) here are the instructions for removing the rear door panel on a facelift (1997+) w202, assuming you don't have keep-fit rear windows ;)

Here is the door, unmolested:

As with the front door, "loosen" the grab handle top and bottom and "gently" pull it away from the inner moulding ;) (if you have done this before you will understand the wink :) )

Behind this are two screws, one at the top of the handle and one at the bottom, take them out

at the outer edge of the door is a plastic piece around the latch, take the screw out of it and take it off

The next bit is quite tricky. Gently pull the panel away from the metal of the door and slowly slide your fingers around the edge, popping the panel clips as you go, I found it easiest to lock the door first so the pin is flush with the top of the trim, and you can lift the whole panel up to take it out of the clamps against the window. When you've done this, the panel should lift away from the door, but be careful because it's still attached at a couple of points: the electric window button and the handle mechanism.

This is where the handle mech hinges:

This is how it attaches to the handle:

This is the reverse side of the electric window button:

You need to undo the button first, while gently pressing on the button from outside, push in the little clips top and bottom to release it from the housing (while resting the whole panel on your knee and leaning on the door so you don't fall over :) )

Then you can just turn the panel through 90 degrees clockwise (for the right hand door, anti-clockwise for the left hand door) to un-hook the handle mechanism from the hinge.

Put the door panel somewhere safe, these things get damaged very easily:

While it's open, here is the window motor, clearly stolen from an e-class:

If I'm going to fit lamps in these doors I will probably have to cut a hole in the bottom of each door, round about here (just enough room and cabling should be easy:

with the window down:

Here is the high-tech mechanism for the door pins

Here is a merged picture so you can see where things are:

To reassemble the door, just follow the instructions backwards! :D

:( :(

How much roughly are those pieces to replace ?

I have had the front doorcards off a couple of times now, and never seem to break any of the clips that you are having problems with - but the drivers side door grab bottom "securing post" is snapped beyond repair. It is bodged with tape at the moment, and looks fine from the outside, but I think i'd better replace it at some point if they are cheap !

Great instructions, by the way !
