Hi all

The HP pump was leaking a few months ago so I got my local garage to service the pump with the kit rather than buy a new one. Unfortunately for me it's leaking again so I'm looking at replacing it with a reconditioned pump instead. Could anyone talk me through the process as it's easily accessible so I fancy having a go...

Would a slightly leaky pump cause temporary rough running when starting from cold? It's worst when the car's been parked facing uphill overnight, not so noticeable when she's pointing downhill... Just a few seconds of rough running and unburnt (white) smoke out the back, then fine (apart from the smell of diesel dripping off the pump)

Cheers

Simon

I'd suggest before doing anything get it diagnosed by a specialist. This will save you ££ in the long run.

Hiya, I would if there were any near me! Nearest is over an hour's drive away and I didn't rate them at all last time I used them. Right car but wrong part of the country for support...

The pump is easy enough to change, 1 bolt holding the pipes in, 3 bolts hold it to the cylinder head. Just be careful with the fuel pipe clips under the pump because if they fail your fuel pipe will end up in the path of the aux belt. I cant remember how much is in the way of it on an ml, maybe pas pipes or rad shroud. these can be removed for ultimate access. I was told by a diesel specialist that even if you put a new seal kit on the pump, it wont last long. as they are built to quite strict tolerances.
