I don't condone vandalism but...

True, thats why you should have the option to buy a space near your house.

Or just keep the current system running which suits everyone ;)

Why not make it a law that every new house must have at least 2 parking places and flats 2 places per flat.

Why do planners allow huge offices to be built in cities with no thought for how the employees get to work? Yet they insist a new pub or inn must have parking for customers. Surely it should be the other way round.

Why is it that all the old buildings we enjoy and treaure so much were built without any planning permission?

In city centers land is to ££ to be given over to car parking but I like the thinking. In most UK cities there is a wealth of public transport to take folk to work.

 I wonder how many cars per family there were when these houses werte built?

I'm tempted to install pay and display machines in our driveway now that every member of our househould own cars.

John

But that's the argument - they do not want to encourage people to bring their cars in to work, they want us to use public transport ;)
Which is another discussion alltogether ;)

I've been looking into applying for planning permission to build 4 detached houes on small land my fiancée owns. The council insist on x number of parking spaces per dwelling as well as a million other things!!

This is the same with most if not all new builds these days. A lot of new blocks of flats either have ground level or basement parking to keep the planners happy.

If people 'bought' a space that would cause chaos with all the cars that need/want to park whilst the 'owner' wasn't using the space.

Where would they go?

Also it's inefficient use of the road space.

Rather than 'bought' do you mean leased a right to park in a designated space.?
You can't buy a public road.

How would this be achieved with houses that front onto the road with no driveway?

I don't think you'd be allowed to build them like that anymore or if you did the developer would have to factor in an area for parking nearby.

Thanks, leased is the correct word. I am going to go midly political and suggest the lease could be collected thru council tax.

I don't understand how you could lease a section of public highway but I do accept that some councils have these parking permits.

If you lease a section of road, would you become responsible for its maintenance? Could you paint lines on the road surface, or pretty pictures?

As an aside, no one has the right to park on the public highway, we merely have the right to use it.

A few months ago I contacted the land registry regarding the exact measurements of the our house is built on.

The drawings I received showed my land commenced from the middle of the highway to for a distance of approximately 100 metres. I queried this as the road is adopted, and maintained by the council, but the land registry was adamant the measurements were correct and my land stretched from the centre of the highway north-wards for 100 metres. I did ask about erecting a toll booth but I fear that fell on deaf ears  ;)
