IAM Members

My insurance costs are down about 35% year on year since I took and passed the IAM course 10 years ago.

In that time it's probably saved me over £2,000, including factoring in the membership fee.

I feel ROSPA is better as a course but ultimately the fact you are looking into either as a way of improving your driving is the principle point here.

The ROSPA course your company sends you on and the ROSPA advanced driver training are 2 different things.

I do hold a ROSPA gold qualification (which is renewed every 3 years)

We drove about for a bit and then did the test. I passed at Gold, which meant I didn't have to do the refresher training for the next 2yrs.

With which insurance company? I've always found companies that offered this type of discount were completely uncompetitive - like many of us have found MB's 'own' insurance, for example.

I've used Adrianflux insurance, they were really good, I had a caterham Supergrad race car as a second car, dry day use, weekends etc, they took this into consideration, quote was approx £220 for the year, I was well happy with that.

TBH she still drives a bit quick but when you remind her that she is an advanced driver she then becomes a very good motorist.

In Skiathos we have 3 rh drive cars and 1 lh drive car. She took to the lh drive like a duck to water and has no trouble with the rh drive cars in a European country. We also have many steep hills, tracks and muddy lanes that she drives up without a problem.

So in a nutshell, yes her confidence and driving skills are second to none.

Did it slow her down or make her a better driver?
I went out for a drive today and did a fair bit of overtaking. To me it was perfectly safe but to other road users it may have looked risky. Do they teach proper overtaking? I would very much like them to take them where i overtake and ask them their opinions, do you get to do that or is there a 'circuit' like a driving test.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find that I hardly ever overtake anyone on single lane roads. I guess it's because I'm older and more patient these days. And I know that if I overtake someone, I'm only going to get held up by someone just around the next corner and not really gain any significant time.

So, if I was to take one of these advanced driving tests and not overtake anything, I wouldn't feel hard done by.
