Hi all,

I have a very strange intermittent leak from what seems to be the fuel pump, but only happens for the first few minutes of the engine running. It will then go away until the car has been stopped for a few days. Even the next day it will not start leaking again, it has to be left for a few days, then it comes back again, leaks for a few minutes, and goes away again!

MB say it needs a new fuel pump at around 280 quid for the pump plus labour...

Oh, when I say a leak, it is a constant trickle, so quite bad.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Is this from the lift pump or the main high pressure pump.

If the main pump it's probably the seal on the back of the pump. All parts are available from a Bosch diesel centre.

Bosch HP pump.

Hi, its the high pressure pump, thanks for the link, i'll check it out, how easy is it to repair?

Unbolt, fix, refit. There is no timing as it's Common Rail, so the pump literally just pressurises the fuel, the timing is electronic at the injectors.

Hmmmm, me thinks I should have learnt russian at school, not really sure where to start with that...

Hello dieselman,
may i have that link as well

Just google and find your nearest Bosch diesel centre.
We have 2 here in Southampton and they both stock the seal kit and offer to fit the kit for a much smaller fee than most garages.
I paid around £15 and did the whole job in a couple of hours. I thought it was good for my first time, so just demonstrating how easy it is as long as you have good tools.
