Intresting c124 coupe

If it's fairly decent and a manual (I think this is an overdrive box) is preferable it's definitely a car that's worth looking at. Bonus too if it is Sportline (have my doubts). Now, if the seats and the wheels are an issue for the next owner, it's simple to rectify that - sell them at a conservative £1500 and replace with standard factory items and be quids in.

The key point to this car is, it's a rare manual, thus the thread.

I can't see your maths working.

If you buy the car for £4000 and sell the wheels and seats for £1500 then you've still spent £2500 on it.

You then have to mess around sourcing and buying replacement alloy wheels, tyres and seats which will probably cost at least £400.

So for £2900 you still have an old W124 coupe with 140k on the clock and lacking full service history.

That's a very expensive manual gearbox.......

I don't know how you work that out if you want a rare manual. Put it another way, how much to convert an auto to manual never mind the hassle?

I've no idea - but a (readily available second-hand) manual gearbox just isn't that much of a USP and doesn't justify the asking price.

You're clearly missing the point, it is it's USP no matter what what the asking price is.

Dye them?

x2 - could be dyed easily. BUT would make a nice E320 turn into a relatively average one. Manual boxes are not the best in these cars, its more of a fast cruiser than a racing car. If you want that sort of thing buy an M3 (I love them).

You're better off buying a set of recaros off German eBay - probably about 2k EUR for a set of electric ones in the right colour. Thats my plan anyway!

I'm clearly not missing the point - any USP is always reflected in the asking price but that price must still be realistic.

However, the world is full of dreamers and chancers and I'm always surprised by the asking prices for classic cars and what they sell for (or seem to sell for before being mysteriously re-advertised a week or two later).

As with any car, this one will make what it makes and whilst you and I value it differently we will not be buying it so do not need to let it worry us too much.

It's likely to be the Getrag dog-leg box which is what was fitted to my 320. In which case it's a direct 5th although the diff ratio is upped to recompense. iirc :dk:

Is the E320 not 24v?

Yes but the 300-24 is 'known' as the 24 to differentiate it from the 300-12. Whereas the 320 is a 320. :D

What would have been more sensible is if they'd named the engines sequentially - M103...M104...M105...M106 ad infinitum. Then there would have been no confusion.

Nothing so unusual I'm afraid.

If you zoom on the 10th photo you can see that it's just a conventional 5-speed gearbox with 1st, 3rd and 5th across the top.

So it is. Missed that . Coincidentally my 320TE with Getrag box came from an ebay seller in Penarth, Cardiff.

I was always under the impression that if you stamped you feet and demanded a manual 320 they always came with the Getrag because the 'normal' 5speed couldn't cope. Obviously wrong.

The gear knob might be incorrect as it does not belong to the car,I might be wrong though

Because it's an old W124 coupe with 140k on the clock and lacking in full service history.

And fancy seats (showing bolster wear on the driver's seat at least) and incorrect alloy wheels won't change this.

Or because you are a purist and like things like it left the factory which is fair enough as is your view.I bet you'd like it more if it had mudflaps :p:p

The advert does not state it hasn't got service history as he does say it has invoices for the work carried and the parts changed etc

That's the 300-24 your thinking of, those all came with the .450 getrag. 320's were usally the normal 5 speed.

I really quite like that alot. Dont know if i could get used to a manual box again tried one in a w202 i had and hill starts were a nightmare lol

The only thing stopping me from buying it is the manual box :o
I know the getrag is a lot of fun but it's not my driving style

Buy it, I'll convert it to auto for you and keep the manual bit's for myself.;)

So how come my 320 had the 450 box? Lucky for me it did cos it's now behind the OM606 in the SL. :D. Perfect set of ratios through a 2.47:1 diff.

What did you do about the flywheel in the end? Did you fit the daulmass, or go with a solid kit?

I used the dualmass. Got an (alleged) uprated clutch cover from some bandit on the web and a new friction disc. Actually works really well, nice soft uptake and only protests if abused on hill starts. Still miss the auto though. Stuck on the M6 for an hour and a half on Mon when some cretin decided he wanted squished by a truck. Clutches are crap at stop start when you're used to a TC doing all the work. Seriously thinking of the 722.6 and controller from oljefer if I can persuade it into the tunnel.
