530d
Hi,

I have recently sold my 530d sport saloon and want a change.

So, I am considering a merc-Benz E320 3.0TD 7G Sport estate but I have no merc experience other than a few vito's.....which haven't been so good.

Don't have a huge budget, circa 10k.

What are these cars like and what to look for?

Thanks in advance.

P.s....If anyone needs heating advise...that's my business!

Hello and welcome to you. I feel someone will be along shortly with advice.

Welcome to the forum!
The car I think you seek is known as an E320cdi Estate and it would be an S211 model. For that budget, you should be able to find a post 2006 facelift model, which is much preferred (by most) over the pre-facelift model. I had a 2009 model of the same type and it was a great car until someone decided they needed it more than me. I now have a pre-facelift 2005 model, which is still a nice car, but not quite as refined or powerful as the previous one. Have a trawl through this forum to get a feel for the things to watch out for, but probably the most common is the turbo oil seal which can leak and contaminate the inlet port motor which sits underneath. Changing the seal is relatively easy and cheap, but an inlet port motor can be a lot more money!

How are they with higher miles, circa 100k?

Hi. I had a 2008 e320cdi and sold it at 90k. It was still running beautifully and was giving me no problems when I sold it. They should do many more miles if the turbo seal doesn't give a problem.

My 'old' (09) one had 30k miles on it when it disappeared. My current '05 one has just passed 150k miles. I bought it at 133k and it was fine then, but the gearbox seems to have developed a 'lumpiness' until it's warm and then it's fine from there on. Also had a front wheel bearing fail at 148k and that wrecked a few bits, so that was a £1500 repair. Otherwise, it's fine! The facelift model was given the 7G gearbox and is much better than the older 5 speed box, though some seem to think otherwise!

sounds good. my mate who has a 535d is trying to convince me to get 1 of them, thing is, around here there are a feck ton of 5 series estates, but merc E class estates are rare.

the 1 i have found is 120k miles, full MB service history.

how to i check stuff on this STAR history thing?

thanks,

STAR readout can only be done at a dealer who has the STAR equipment - usually either a main dealer or a good indy. The latter will charge about 1/2 the price of the former!

What year is the one that you've found?

I went from a 55 plate 535d sport touring to the E320cdi Avantgarde estate with a Brabus D6 tuning box on it.
The Merc I enjoyed more and only really sold it as I fancied the newer model, which I hated.

I have owned loads of estates, 535d, 335i, Audi A6 3.2 quattro, S4 Avant, 2001 S210 E320 V6 petrol, 2010 S212 E350cdi, 2007 E320cdi avantgarde, to name just a few.

Hand on heart the S211 was the best of the lot, it was plenty quick enough, far more comfy than the BMW, nicer interior imho (and my 535d had loads of toys including prof nav, heads up etc.) and was just a joy all round to own, not as focused as the BMW but was plenty focused enough.

I will buy another one at some point, but this time it will be an E350 or E500 petrol.
My old petrol used to average 28mpg and the diesel was 33mpg.
Round town the petrol was about 24-25 where as the diesel was around 27-28.

The extra refinement of the petrol was really noticeable, it made it feel so much more special.
I was doing 40,000 miles a year then and even at that mileage the extra costs were not worth worrying about, now I am down to 20k miles a year the savings are tiny.
Plus no DPF to worry about etc.

I would happily own another E320cdi, but if two cars were sat their with identical spec and one was a petrol version that would get my money.

Where the diesel won was on a very steady 50mpg cruise, I could see 45mpg then, where as the petrol would be 38mpg at the very best, but I never sit at 50mph so that really was irrelevant.
Oh, and on my 10 mile run in winter from cold the petrol was more economical than the diesel.

thank you all knidly.

i hopefully will be going to see a couple of 320 sports over the wkend.

thanks agian
