Okay so I know my CLK 430 isn't going to be exactly economical on fuel but I was hoping for a little bit better than this!!

I travel 16 miles a day and it's all town driving. The onboard computer tells me I'm averaging 16MPH and 16MPG!

I'm getting about 230 miles per tank.

Does this sound about right? Or should I be looking at a tune up?

Thanks

My MPG seems to be relative to Avg. MPH 23 mph = 23 mpg (roughly).
Then again mine is a 3.2ltr

Hi well to be honest, ask yourself the question, am I paying for 16 MPG or not, you must know how much fuel your putting in the tank? On short jorney's like yors you never get realy hot. The Lambda needs to be at 300 degrees C and the cat has to get hot to perform it's job properly. If it isn't then you will allways run rich, ie use more. The lump you have is afterall a V8 and 4.3 liters, the expected fuel consumption on a motorway is about 9 kilometers per liter. a quick calc will tell you that you should get on a run is 9 liters per 100 klicks or 55 miles devide 55 miles by 4.5 to a Imp gallon gives you a cool 20 miles to the gallon.
so in a urban environment, it probably isn't far out. Sorry, but unless your name is Jermy (who gives a **** the BBC pays my fuel bill) Clarkson then hey ho.

Yes , thats about right ...

I get about 14 , but i have a heavy right foot.

I try not to think about it too much , every time i press the loud pedal , i break out in smiles. Worth every penny ...

Right foot problem??

After the last reply it just jogged my mind a bit, mine is a 202 1800 engine, i am disabled so can't afford the big gas bills i used to pay. but i think it is so funny when i see a fat car, go screaming past trying very hard to break the sound barrier ( I’m not say you do) but i love it when i see a dude scream past in a big merc, beemer or whatever going like he or she is try to put the fire out only to see them pull into the station about a mile up the road a yup you guessed it 15 minutes later who comes screaming past on his or her way to the next station but Flash Gordon. I go from Pontefract to Livingstone in Scotland to see my daughter quite often, to date I have managed to do the trip on a half a tank there and back, i keep to or just above the limit say 72 in cruise. because my wife is Dutch we also go to Holland via Dover and Calais to Tilburg in Holland to date I haven't been able to do the journey in under half a tank? 70 litre tank in mine. Couldn't do that in my Toyota Supra though, dun no what it is but when i get behind the wheel of my babe on wheels I suddenly get a real lead right foot, always have, I just love pressing the go button. Like the man says Just floor it and listen to the growl and put a smile on your face. Ian
:D

A bit difficult to floor it around here, there's always a bus, a tram, a cab and an ambulance in front of you! :D

Err, does it?

9 litres (at 4.546 litres per Imp. Gal) is about 2 gallons.

100 Kms is about 62.5 miles.

Miles divided by gallons is about 31.

RayH

PS: I think he should be doing better than 14 MPG. Last time I got anything that bad was with a 1980 450SLC commuting in London.

Like I said, I'm getting 16MPG drving around town and have managed 30MPG on the motorway.

This equates to about 230 miles or 410 miles to a full tank, respectivley.

Howard confirmed this sounds about right...he's got two CLK 430's.

Any other CLK 430 drivers out there?

It is right.

I get around 30 mpg on the motorway too , maybe 31 with the AC off.

Around town 14-16 is spot on.

CLK handbook quotes urban cycle at 16.5L/100km for the 430

I was surprised to hear my brothers 4.2 Jaguar S-Type is returning an average of 24MPG and an average of 16MPH!! Can't be right surely??

Don't forget your tyre pressures, they can make a world of difference!

Hi,
Same engine in my C43 except for its in a higher state of tune, those fuel figures are the same as i get out of mine.

To put this into perspective, I have an 11 year old c230k saloon.
My commute is 3.1 miles. 6.2 miles round trip.
My consumption is around 21.5mpg or 4.75mpl with the a/c on in cabin recirculation mode.
My engine 4cyl 2,295cc.
ie just over half the size of your 4,300cc engine.
You cannot expect any sort of fuel economy in town with a large engine.
Frankly, both of our cars are wasted on city driving.
So unless you get to go on fast autobahns or nice twisty country roads...
My 2c
Les

Slight highjack here, but I've been a little surprised with the MPG I'm getting in my E500 (don't laugh!). When I collected it I had about an hour and a half drive to get home down the motorway and through SW London and managed over 26mpg which I was very happy with. Since then it's gone down hill, on long trips across town if I'm lucky I'll get around 16mpg, and shorter trips are single figures, 8-9mpg. In total since I've had the car I've averaged 18mph & 18 mpg over 250 odd miles. Is that about right?

Sounds about right , a five litre V8 that never gets up to temperature .

It would have been the long motorway run that got your average up.

I've got long trip coming up this weekend, I'm probably a little too interested in what my mpg will be on that journey. I've never had a car that put it in your face quite like this though, makes me feel guilty every time I boot it!

Oh they're shocking , i can literally watch my fuel gauge drop if i'm driving hard .

Over the last 16 Years my urban average has been 18MPG -FROM NOTHING BIGGER than 2.0litres
My Mondeo 2.0 auto did 16mpg- and only 12mpg with A/C on.Even my "50mpg" Peugeot 405 TDiesel did only 23mpg
