Is it feasible to retrofit a 7 speed box into a 5 speed SL65?

So there's my 04 SL65 and the Mrs's 'cute' 05 SLK 350.

Thing is though, she's got 7 gears and I've only got 5 and even though it's not a competition (apparently!) it just doesn't seem right somehow, when I've got more horses and wider tyres, that there should be fewer gears between them. Anyway, I was rather getting to like the whole 7speed thing over the Winter since we got her car and until I got mine.

So...
a) was the 7 speed an option for the SL65 in the first place?
b) are the gearboxes across the R230's all the same or is the AMG one 'special'?
c) is a 7speed retrofit easy / feasible / doable / a bit problematic / a totally stupid idea.

I don't think the SL65 ever came with a 7 speed. And as far as I am aware the supercharged engines of that era all came with the 5 speed because the 7 speed couldn't handle the torque...

Aaaahhh... disappointing but makes sense.

So basically her gearbox is just a bit too wimpy to be a serious proposition for mine - I'll enjoy letting her know ;)

Well we/I know that but to the girl, 7 is always preferable 5 (for some reason :dk:)

Yup - 7 speed was never an option as nowhere near as strong as the 5 speed.

The 65 has so much torque it doesn't even need a 5-speed....

Actually, I've been noticing that. So much of the time, being in 1st or 2nd is just down to which engine tone U want to listen to.
