I've just put a deposit down on an SL500

I've never driven a R129, is the chassis based on the 124 or did I just make that up?

You know you need to get some AMG split rims or maybe AMG monoblocks... lurvely.

I'm not a fan of the split rims but yes, it needs a set of monoblocks on there I recon. They'll be on my shopping list in a couple of months once my finances get back to normal.

That looks like a really nice car, Sp!ke. Worth the wait, I'd say. Congratulations :thumb:

Good things come to those that wait ;). Looks great!

Cheers,

Gaz

W124 based it is, I believe. It's smaller than you might think, although also heavier. From Wikipedia, for what it's worth: "The R129 was based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124"

Nice car. Lovely colours, second only to my preferred silver/black because of practical considerations. You'll enjoy it, I'm sure.

For multi-vehicle insurance try

Primo plc - Independent Insurance Brokerage: Commercial Insurance and Personal Insurance

As recommended by Honest John, the more vehicles per driver, the better the deal. I halved my insurance bill by switching to them (five cars).

Never been a huge fan of the 129 shape, but its starting to grow on me, that pano-roof makes all the difference, really makes it look sharp - much better than the cloth roof can look unless immaculate. Good luck with it!

Really nice looking. Appears to have good pedigree. Needs nothing else..apart from a lovely set of rims to set the car off nicely.

Wow!
I hope that deposit wipes off ok!:o Paint looks shiny so it should be ok:doh:
The car looks great, bet you can feel the wind in your hair already!:thumb:

It's this one below.

I've been looking at these for over a year and I've seen a lot of cars now. I went to see this one this morning and despite not being a great fan of grey interiors, or the wheels, it leapt out at me as being a far better car than many I've seen costing at least £3k more.

Everything is totally as it should be, no paint, no molestations, no dings or scrapes anywhere, a really nice genuine car. The dealer is going to give it a service and sort the aircon which didnt appear to be working (bit difficult to tell when its only 5 deg) but other than that, the car is a cracker.

Just got to sort out the insurance and balance of funds now

Hi Spike, just seen the pics of your SL, beautiful car. You got the panoramic roof, if you could, would you keep me updated on the driving experiences you have and the practicalities of the glass roof. Regards Oily Rag

Obviously I'm biased, but IMO the later 2-piece 18" AMGs (staggered) suit the R129 perfectly. Less fussy than the 3-piece (and less prone to cracking ;) )

That really is a very attractive car. Niiiice.

Thats absolutely brilliant, well done to you! bet you're well chuffed.

They do look nice I have to agree.

I always think that split rims make the wheels look smaller than they are though. I think I prefer the simpler lines of the monoblocks. (certainly when it comes to cleaning)

It'll take a couple of months before I'll be shopping for wheels though as I need to sell a couple of motorcycles to sort out my bank balance. Until that time I'm going to be living off credit cards  (This seems to be the cheapest way of getting a bridging loan at the moment unless anyone can suggest a better alternative)
