Congratulations, that is a lovely looking car, agree not the best wheel design they ever did, but a nice set of AMG's will set it off a treat.

Just looking at those pictures, really makes me miss mine..... I hope to buy another one day, so that I can transfer my SL 500 like plate on to it!

That is a *very* unusual interior for an SL.

I have the same in my W124 and think it great, partly because of its rarity and also because it has a real classic Mec feel to the interior as the colour has been used since the begining of motoring time.

As a matter of interest....what AMG spec do you think you have?

This week has dragged on, I can't sleep due to my excitement over picking it up.

Currently I'm in the hands of the banks cheque clearance lead times

Fabulous Car Spike - congrats. I love the SL - over the years I had 2 SL320's of that age and a 2006 SL350 . Its one of the very very few models I've ever bought more than once - they are that good - and yours being the SL500 will be a superb drive - Enjoy :bannana:

Just got the news that the car has been serviced, the wheels refurbed and the aircon has been fixed (new compressor fitted) and I'll be picking up the car tomorrow.

Yesterday was a busy affair.

Off to collect the car and then immediately back to my mate Martin's workshop in Brentford to get the car on the ramp and have a proper once over and catalog everything that needed doing.

After picking up the car, despite it driving very nicely, whilst on the drive to Brentford I noticed a couple of clonks and bongs from the suspension. I was also suspicious that the viscous fan coupling sounded like it wasn't properly disengaging.

On getting the car on the ramp, we had a really good poke around and it was clear that the visco was shot, requiring replacement (not a cheap part), the fan belt was past its best and the belt tensioner and a couple of other idler wheel bearings were humming and on their way out and needed changing. It was also decided to change all the torsion bar bushes (front and rear) as well as the rear control arms which should sort out the suspension noises I heard.

We also tracked down the source of an oil leak to a small gasket (using a very fancy Snap-On camera device similar to ones used for keyhole surgery) at the base of the oil filter housing (gasket on order). All in all, the car looks and sounds great and with the above items being easily sorted, I'm happy as Larry.

So anyway, I changed all the bushes and the fan belt and tensioner and idler wheels. The Visco is on order so for now, I've removed the fan completely (its cold enough weather and the twin electric aircon fans seem to be capable of maintaining 85 deg on their own in this weather). The filter housing gasket is also on order to that'll have to be done next week too. I'll likely be changing the gearbox oil and filter also as a precaution although the oil does look reasonably fresh. I'm also going to change all 16 plugs too while I am at it. (I didnt know the SL500 had 16 plugs :o)

I did stumble across something quite interesting on the manifold and wondered if anyone could shed light on it. Why would the manifold have an AMG sticker? (see below) As far as I am aware it isnt an AMG car.

Manifold made by Pierburg for AMG models, best fit for the 500?

That's the only pic you've posted?! :D

Sorry - about the lack of pictures.

I'll be giving the car a *proper* clean and polish before I'll be taking pictures.

Congratulations.

Sounds good Spike, and wasting no time getting stuck in it seems ;)

Whilst you've got it all in bits, fan belt, viscous coupling and tensioner etc it's got to be worth checking the water pump and replacing the coolant perhaps. The bearing on the water pump for my M113 engined car was worn which caused the water pump to be noisy when under load from the tension of the drive belt. Relatively easy to change and I assume easier on an R129 if needed due to the larger engine bay?

Will
