j reg sl300 slow to change gear

since i bought my j reg sl300 i have had the sam problem; it won't change up for half a mile. if i floor it there is a 6 second delay before it changes down. i feel like i have half a car and it gets quite exciting when pulling into other traffic! is it the gear box filter that needs changing?
