Not sure if this applies to all Mercedes cars, but the kickdown switch in my ML has to be really pushed down on until it 'clicks' down.

Is this normal? or should it press down smoothly? A friend has an SL280 and he said his is silent and can bearly feel it being pressed.

no they can click also depends on how much it is used by previous owner ie; wear and tear

I think the W163 ML has a different throttle pedal to your friend's R129 SL280.

On the SL it it hinged from the floor, but (IIRC) the ML pedal is not (it 'hangs' from above). So that maybe why your kickdown switch feels a bit different :)
