Killed my PC!

I rely on three or four key pieces of software for my work none of these run under linux. There is no alternative as clients want stuff delivered in certain file formats

Please explain to me how Linux could be seen as "better" for me

At home, I use computers for various things including playing games which do not run under Linux, using CNC software which does not support Linux and for photography. Sadly there is no Linux versionof my camera control software

Again, I ask you, please explain how Linux is better for me than an operating system which works, is regularly upgraded and has (if needed and at a price) technical help which is only a phone call away.

I'm not as "vehemently opposed" to Linux but telling me that it's better than windows is like telling me that I don't need an estate car to ferry around the family plus two dogs when a unicycle is cheaper and better :D

Andy

Tough luck.

Tough luck.

oh good a rational argument :)

Something i do find amazing about linux (I mentioned it on the other thread as well) goes something like this.......

1, somebody posts on a support forum because they have hit what is to them an insurmountable problem whilst trying to get to grips with Linux

2, all the Linux geeks and fanboys gather and attack that person

3, Everything except Linux is blamed; from the users computer to whether or not it's raining in Bogota that particular afternoon

4, The user is told that it must be their fault as it's not happened to anyone else even though a quick search of Google shows that the very same problem has affected hundreds of people

5, the disaffected user reminds the Linux users that he/she is not the only one suffering with this problem and would rather the great geek gathering (linux forum) helped them rather than told them nothing was wrong

6, the so called support forums have now moved on to the next "newbie bashing session" and there are no further answers

Andy

Tough luck.

I told you I just gave up... whats that addage about arguing with someone and you cant win as theyll just bring you down to their level.

Give up Andy, hold your hands high, and just shout " I surrender".

you may be right :)

I'll leave them to have fun. After all who on earth would the "average user" want to use a computer for anything but a bit of web browsing and writing the odd letter?

Andy

Personally rather than a linux CD I have a copy of boot CD by a guy called Hiren this has most of the utilities you need for PC fixing.

I just gave you guys a trade secret as used by one ot the largest company in this country how to recovery your precious files, instead of appreciation, I got sh!t.

It just that sometime it not invented here ugh it rubbish.

Linux is so simple, download the Knoppix iso file and it even tells you how to burn a CD with it. Download the iso recorder plugin and you can burn a CD using XP or Vista. Bang here your fix.

I treat you guys and lasses as highly regarded Merc pilots and I was told to treat you guys differently.

I haven't had a sip for over 2 weeks. Can't afford the money nor the time, it make me sick behind the wheel.

Well said sir.

Linux has the capability to save files from a corrupted Windows system. If you do not want to take this option then reload Windows and lose all your data.

The Linux option might seem scary but once you have used it you have a rescue disk in the drawer for the next time Windows dies on you. And lets face it - its happened to most of us.

Served you right. Listen to the experts. I gave up helping you guys. Good night.

I've just re-read this thread twice and it's hard to see why it escalated so quickly over a couple of posts.

On Topic - A Linux boot CD is a perfectly valid way of getting files off a broken windows system, hardly a trade secret, certainly not the only way.

Off Topic - We seem to have poorly informed comment and playgound slagging on both sides. As Malcolm said let's have some respect.

I'd better leave now before I unite both sides against me

Malcolm, all that was said was linux is no use to the average user , horses for courses. If you read all the posts, it was Dragon who was initially rude in his response, of tough luck secondly with his response of Loser!

I asked him if he was drunk because his posts are very hard to read, lacking basic syntax and grammar.
I use linux systems everyday, I actually host my LEA website, and email system on an SME box. Everyone of our schools uses a linux based web caching, and internet protocol box. I am aware of linux and its uses.

Dragon states that hes been an ICT engineer for 30 years but has only "yesterday" learned about knoppix - hardly an experienced response.

In fact his response was..

"Can't post it here. You can get a trial DVD from you know where. You are too late for XP but you can get Vista then you don't even need to buy and use Talktalk software because it got built-in firewall and other stuffs if you use Talktalk
cool.gif
."

What does that mean????

He keeps stating hes been a techie for over 30 years yet believes linux to be the oldest OS he knows!

Lets cut to the chase here, hes talking rubbish and then telling forum members to trust him.

You know Im all in favour of helping as much as I can - but you wouldn't let me misadvise a forum member on say rewiring a car tv when you knew I wasn't making sense.

I've just re-read my response above and although i don't regret what Ive posted, I wish I hadn't been drawn in.
This is well off topic - sorry.

Its more the manner of the answering, and how it is said, not what the product is.

I will say again I know 3 people at the top who use the linux system as well as others.

Because my neighbour drives a Honda that does not make him an idiot.

When moakes came on he was poo pood, yet that man is one of the cleverest guys we have in the MB world. He is the only person that I have found that has rebuilt the ASD on his 129 600 and made it all work like new. He is also heavily into computers in a big way,, it seems that if a new member with say only 40 post as in this case, he can be subject to bad mouthing by members of longer standing.

It is not a case of right or wrong, its the respect in what is said, and how its said.

I went through hell with one member on this thread when I started out on forums 2½ years ago, and I almost gave up. I have never in my life been so cocky as to what is right or wrong, there can always be another side and another way along with something new tomorrow.
Not everyone is able to get a point across easily, particularly when it comes to writing it down.

If this went on in the MB threads it would be horrible,,just because X has done it this way, Y has no right to shoot him down, as maybe Y is the one who does not understand, and maybe Y should do some research first.

We all can read about how some people tackle a job, and it worked for them with the tools they had, and within their own ability. Just because I would not do it that way does not give me the right to shoot him down, maybe I could learn from his way for other faults.

Due to youre reply Malcolm Ive just re read this entire thread.
I fully support your sentiments and agree with the content of what you say. However I had to re read as I didnt know what moakes had actually done or said.
Im afraid if you check back all he has done is made 2 sarcastic comments.

A little PS... I am in no way being rude towards moakes - as I said I didnt even realise he had posted and am sure by the quality of his posts he is good guy.
