Knocking on steering on new GLC

Hi All,

New member here, who was on the verge of buying a GLC until I read this thread. I'm now moved toward a C-Class 4MATIC Estate which is a pity, in that the GLC seemed to fit my requirements perfectly.

Think I joined this forum just in time![/QUOTE

Why not give your local MB dealer a call tell them what you have read about the 4Matic and see what they have to say it will help the forum build up a profile on MB should we need to use it in the future. Or better still have you had a test drive yet and you can see for yourself?

referring back to my previous post http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/gene...-knocking-steering-new-glc-8.html#post2400635

I asked you to post your chassis no in order to determine which transfer box your particular car came with.
Does it have the 31/69 single planetary gear transfer box code [51A] or the 45/55 double planetary gear transfer box code [50A] ?
This might be available on the build sheet for your car?
Working on the theory that the 31/69 torque split might have a greater propensity for drive wind up than the more equally split 45/55 ratio. This might explain why the phenomenon is not evident on LHD cars if they all have 45/55 transfer boxes? Its just a theory- without further evidence its difficult to know.

Interesting but I think ultimately MB HQ need to look into this problem as taking your car back to where you bought it will only result in the dealerships technical staff testing your car and coming to THEIR conclusion which will probably be the MB mantra of its a 'characteristic'. I doubt if any dealership will go out on a limb and say that's its not a C and it is a design fault so hard to know how this issue will ever be taken seriously for ALL owners up and down the country. Or am I wrong?

I merely offer the above as a possible explanation. If it turns out cars with the 45/55 [50A] box also suffer this phenomenon then the theory is disproved.

Oh I don't need to share my VIN publicly for that ;)

Mine definitely got the 31/69 split, it is the GLC43 AMG which all have it. And not only that, it is very evident that there is a rear wheel drive bias :). It is lovely when it gets going and through flowing corners. A really good well balanced drive.

Did you take your car in earlier today and if so how did you get on?

Sorry just read your earlier post so guess your car was left with your dealer. Did you have a chance to demonstrate the condition with the technician before leaving it there?

I waited there, and no they weren't interested in a test drive after all. None of their promised senior staff were available. And their investigation was nothing more than a visual inspection on the ramp, with the camera pointing to a Mercedes bulletin saying I need winter tyres. They did give me a letter by Mercedes UK addressed to myself (amazing that they had the time to get that so quickly ;)) highlighting that this is not a safety issue, merely a comfort issue. Well at least they recognise that part ;) But ahem that is it, there is no problem with the car. And infuriatingly they had to audacity to tell me when this occurs. Funny that as that doesn't match with this owners experience. And they can do and diagnose that all remotely. It is a bloody miracle.

So cancel it, I would if I hand't bought this already.

I had a test drive before I knew of the problem and never had the opportunity to use full lock. I did subsequently mention the problem to the dealer who went all cold on me and reacted as if this was the first they had heard of it.I have been offered another test drive to see for myself.

And the letter I received attached.

Seriously people, just give up on this vehicle.

Apart from this problem how are your feelings about the car now?

Same as when I bought it, fits my needs & budget perfectly and I love driving it. Built well, looks great (IMO), fits my golf gear in and three other people. Also not too 'In your face' when taking clients out in it.

I'll do a review in another thread with my full opinion.

Winter tyres to go on at +7 degrees eh? I just wondered if your Mercedes was delivered to you when the outside temp was around +7 and was it delivered with winter tyres fitted if so. (It obvioously was not but here comes a bit of fun)

Perhaps they have a vehicle in stock with winter tyres fitted so you could actually drive it and feel the difference.

Now I know you are fed up with the whole shebang but as you press forward with your case - they should have a least "one test drive" vehicle in stock fitted with winter tyres because the last time I looked we are way below +7 on a daily basic and will be for a couple of months. Therefore all test vehicles held by Mercedes of your type should now be on winters. (I very very much doubt this is the case though) Time to have some fun perhaps, if you have the energy.

I want to have a bit a fun, and I have the energy. But Mercedes just don't have a sense of humour. The service manager just plainly refused to answer whether he had winter tyres on his car. The business manager just agreed and says her GLC does the same. When I asked about the GLS and GLE they simply agree that they don't do that.

I mean how can you even have some fun with them about it.

PS. Don't know where you live but nowhere near persistently below 7 where I live. It was double digits when I shot my video last weekend.

Look forward to an update.

Recieved this reply to my request for comparison between GLC and C250 4MATIC!

Hi Mr ,

We do not have a 4MATIC C Class Estate available for test drive. Alternatively you can drive the rear wheel drive C250 d AMG Line Estate on Monday. I will also have the GLC here to test drive.

I have spoken to one of our technicians and they have told me that there is chance that the steering may do the same at low speeds in the C Class 4MATIC Estate.

I look forward to seeing you at 1pm on Monday. If anything changes, please let me know.

Kind Regards

I haven't had issues with our GLC so I am a bit confused by MB's response.

Can you confirm in the colder weather of today, you still do not have a clonking, crabbing, skipping issue ? Also are you tyres winter tyres ?

If you a) Don't have the issue and b) don't have winter tyres, it would mean this is NOT a generic car issue, and thus a fix should be possible.

He is on Pirelli Scorpion tyres on 19" wheels. They are special all season tyres.
