Hi all
I have just tried to set up my wifes computer for wireless and the router and Lan card is showing as GOOD.
I have limited or no connectivity and says signal strength is excellent so obviously I cannot connect to the net,I have tried to find some advice on Google but it is mostly computer jargon has anybody got some advise on a quick fix:confused::confused:

try rebooting the router? and the computer.

you arent getting an IP address which means its either the router not supplying one or your comptuer not asking for one.

Hi fuzzer
Tried that with no luck.
hows the snow up there (quite bad in Bristol)

I noticed since rebooting router it says acquiring network address but now the LAN card keeps dis-connecting and then connecting and it keeps doing this.

is this a sky router by any chance?

Snow is non existant up here :) just the odd bit almost melted , we hardly had any at all. Your snowfall was about 10x worse than ours, thankfully! :)

Hi Fuzzer
Thomson TG585v7 4 port wireless router.
I have been using it for a month on my computer with no problems it was only when I set my wifes up with a RALINK EW-712g Lan card that I am getting problems, mine still works OK but the problems that I am getting is trying to get hers to work

try plugging it into the wired connection with the wireless lan enabled and see if that fixes it.

ive had that before with a thompson router.

Its very important that you boot everything up in the correct sequence. Switch everything off. Then boot up the ASDL router ( I am assuming you are connected to the net via a telephone line not cable) WAIT 3-4 minutes for the modem to establish a link to your ISP --this involves establishing an electronic communication link but also identifying and connecting you to the ISP servers. Only then boot up your computer Using the RUN command in the Start menu type ipconfig/release--enter, then ipconfig/renew-- enter. Now try opening your browser and try connecting again. If this hasn't worked type http://192.168.1.1 in the browser address line along the top of the page This should allow you to address the router directly and check out its settings. You may have to supply a default username and password which is detailed in your router manual. Somewhere in the settings you should see listed Domain Name server/s there should be at least a couple of those listed.

Some more things to try:

  • Place wife’s Laptop in same room as router.
  • Ensure both router and WLAN card have WEP/WPA encryption disabled (you can set that up later).
  • Temporarily disable any firewall you have running.

Most probably you have entered the WEP key incorrectly. (from bitter experience :o )

Thanks once again all you guys for the information (most of us have said before this has to be the best site ever quick replys and loads of knowledge)
I will try the things you have suggested and come back to you later, when I googled it lots of people have had the same problem and it is caused by service pack2 on WIN XP so have some things to try regards that.

Double checked that and I did put the correct one in

Both in the router and the WLAN card? Suggest you disable in both until you get the link working.

Another thing to try - change the channel frequency in the router to either 1, 5, 9, or 13 (the WLAN card should find it automatically). Mine was on ch11 by default and was very flakey, especially at long range. Changed to ch9 and haven't seen a drop out since...:)

See who has control of the card ie windows or software installed by the wireless adapter ie Intel /Netgear and try this, it may be that both systems are trying to get an IP had trouble with a few laptop and now just let xp/vista control the card. This can be done under the properties of the network card.

yep, thats happend to me so many times - its the first thing I double check now as the syptoms are identical to the problem here - strong signel but no connectivity and the pc spending an age waiting for an ip address before timing out and giving up.

I dont think it matters about the power up sequence - I sometimes switch everything off from a single point ( wall socket that feeds an extension block with router pc etc connected) when I switch back on everything fires up together & just sorts itself out and works fine.

Do you know your ping page for the router?

If you can get this from google or mf website(my belkin is http://192.16.....etc.)

Then on the DHCP page you can check the IP allocated to to each PC - you might find there is a conflict there.

You'll need to go into your wife's laptop via network connection and assign a free IP address to it.... IF that is the issue

It was my most recent issue when I added another wireless device onto my router a few weeks back

Good luck

Still think its a conflict with the network card as to who has control have had this problem with several HP and Dell laptops.

Hi all
Update I promised I have the Ralink Wireless Lan Card saying Statis Good.

Wireless Network connection connected and signal strength is excellent. and it is showing as connected to the router but it will not connect to the net,the main computer with the router is fine but the wifes with the card in will not connect I have tried pinging with the ip address with no luck.
Google can be handy some times but in this case loads of people with my problem but none of the fixes have worked,so at the end of the day I have decided to get a divorce and find another woman that does not need a computer for her work.:D:D

Hi as i said before who is controlling the card the Realink software or windows its self, try disableing the Realink software usually a tick box and in the propertiies of the card tick the box for windows to control the card, worth a try.
Regards Mark

Hi Mark
Thanks for your help but I think this has got to the stage of letting somebody look at it that knows what wireless setup is all about (which I don't) I think it will turn out to be something simple and a quick fix.
