Little daily driver with super fuel efficiency

Toyota AYGO 1l 3 cyl

£20 tax

Insurance group 1

Like a little go kart... dont expect huge amounts of power but it is fuel efficient and fun.
Revs High, economical to repair.
Build quality is plasticy but not fragile.

I have driven one for 3 years and its been reliable and quite fun yet very frugal.

Get a Kia Rio, you should get a 2008/9 for 3k and they come with 7 year 100k warranty.

The boot is bigger than the Polo and you will get a comfortable 40+mpg, on second thoughts get the Defender you wont have to worry about mpg just drive in a straight line and reduce the journey's mileage!

Or the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 which although the same car are often a bit cheaper to buy.

^ Agreed! A mate's wife has a C1 and loves it! Nippy and frugal and reasonably spacious for it's overall size.

Budget £6k, about 3 years old+, very fuel efficient, not needed to carry large loads, decent ride, small. Anybody with good experiences of cars like this?

Audi A2. The newest will be 7 years old now. External size of a Fiesta, similar internal size of a Focus. 65mpg. £30 tax. Up to 30k between services if you want the variable service interval. No rust. Stick with a base car on 15" for the best ride. Digital climate control is on most cars. They are becoming expensive for what they are though - but depreciation is very slow.

That's a very good idea Will. I hate depreciation.

By coincidence spent a lot of time today in a TD5 Defender. Gosh that was fun.

Brother in law has C1 and sis has Ford Ka and I can't say they do much.

So £10k Landie or G Wagen (this cheap runaround bit is quite flexible)?

Mk1 Ka is a hoot to drive. A lot like the original Mini - torquey engine, slick gear change, super accurate steering and a playful rear. Later ones appear to have lost the charm.

I like G Wagens very much but I think you might be surprised at their prices, their drinking ability, and the cost of spares. Sooooo much better than a Landie. Plenty of help/advice here:

I'll stick to a Landie. Thousands of rough hewn sons of soil and toil can't be wrong.

Bellow understands the brief perfectly. Fun to drive is key to the decision.

I wonder who's that is? :)

I was thinking more of this type of Landie. It's a bit of a war zone parking up at Slough Tesco..

Lovely series 3 there. I had a LWB one of these. Ex-MOD with extended spring hangers :D It would go anywhere. Spent a month living in it as I traveled around Spain years ago. The only trouble I had was when I slammed the door a bit hard and the glass fell out of the window :o

I had a SWB Series 3 just for off roading. I would get a 90 over a series 3.

A Defender would be my starting point certainly.

Yeah, much better ride. I had a 90 TD. Cost a bloody fortune to fix after the block got a crack in it though. Common problem on that engine. Now a TDI would be nice though.

I had a defender. Hated every minute of ownership.

Badly made
Unreliable
Rusty on a whole new level
Horrid to drive
Used diesel like a petrol range rover
Anything that held oil leaked, everywhere.
Even with the heater on it was drafty so it was cold.
50mph felt unsafe.

I may have been tainted by a bad one but I learnt to hate it!!!

I sold it and it blew up on the bloke on the way home in style. Covered the screen in oil as most of the rotating parts made a hasty exit.

Sounds absolutely perfect for me then. Time to get looking seriously!

Decent Ride - Landrvoer - Never!
Small - Landrover - SWB ish.

It's a classic thread!

Not wishing to push the point too far , but a new VW UP! can be had for eight grand ( with some attractive deals if you're buying as a business customer ) . There's also an option of three years servicing for £150 but I expect you could haggle that from the dealer .i

That would get you into a brand new VW , with full warranty . The car has been voted Car of the Year this year by Auto Express and , having seen them in the showroom , it is a cracking little car and not a strange looking thing like many other offerings in that price range . From opening the door of the car in the showroom it does not feel any less well built than any other VW .

Of course , if you really want a Landie .....
