Long drives

Wow, a lot of you have also been enjoying the supreme comfort of an MB seat :)

Our longest one-day stint was Gent in Belgium to Copenhagen in Denmark, just under 700 miles.

What did you all do to stay alert? Cold drinks, sweets, loud music, coffee breaks?

Cheers,
Matt

Took two days to drive from Bicester, Oxfordshire to Tavira, Portugal - using the Eurosewer and a majority of toll roads. About 1500 miles with an overnight stay in Northern Spain!

We shared the driving and had a break every two hours or so - topping up the tank and having a drink/bite to eat. Long couple of days but saw some fantastic scenery and endured temperatures from 18c (Oxfordshire) to 45+ (Andalucia)!! Fortunately, the VW we were driving had fantastic A/C!

3200 miles around Europe in 2 weeks, about 4 years ago. France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Monaco, France then home. I really enjoyed it, especially the autobahns! :)

823 miles in one day - Doncaster to the Alps in my old Pug 406. Took about 14 hours with only stops being for the ferry and one tank of fuel.

Took a bit longer coming back as I had a caravan attached to the back!

Recently did a 9-day 2800 mile motorcycle trip of Europe - does that count?
Went to a rally in north Germany, then down to the Swiss Alps,Italy and back up through France.

Drove/hitched the whole 15,000+ miles of Highway 1 in Oz in the late 1980's (circumnavigate the entire Australian continent). Travelled more than half of that in a 20 year old Holden before it blew up in The Blue Mountains! (Plus took a 'detour' to Alice!)

Took 12 months to do it, kept getting sidetracked!

<cue chubby>Alice.... who the $%^& is Alice

well, I am going to spend the next 3 months walking as i am carless.

Guess I failed again with this.

Talking of Chubbs....guess who I bumped into in Jersey Airport today....

Status Quo!!!!.

And My Vasey himself. They are playing tonight, he is on tommorrow night. I am back in my apartment now missing both.

Eh, most recent long drive was only 360 odd miles. Involved travelling from Aberdeen to Inverness, up via Achnasheen to Kinlochewe and through Torridon, through Glen Garry, down to Ft William and then well, home. I kinda described it here

I haven't taken it abroad, I would love to but funds are tight and TBH there is lots of driving to do all around scotland thats up there with the best. Hell, even the sun shines here

I have taken the car all the way to Ollies and back in one weekend and found it a very agreeable companion (7-8hrs at the wheel in total but a weak stomach meant frequent stops).

Yup, I'll say it does (mainly coz I've just done a similar distance trip with my wife on a bike - Across France, Belgium, Germany, & Austria to Campitello di Fassa in the Sud Tirol, then on to Perugia, across to Lago Maggiore, then home via Switzerland, Germany and France).

BTW, that's one hell of a CX you've got there :thumb:

As I drive all over Europe for a living I won't include any of those trips, normally in excess of 3000 KM, but the biggest single journey trip I ever did was back in the 70's from Suffield in Canada to Belize City in Central America, just over 3500 miles, there were 4 of us driving two Yellow School buses for use by the Army in Belize. We encountered a few problems with speeding and driving on roads that school buses shouldn't be on, but generally it was a great trip and we were getting paid for it as well.

Way back in the 80's I went to oversee the first race of a new racecar in Canada. Based in Calgary the nearest circuit we could find to test on prior to the race was near Winnipeg at least 1200 miles away! So we set off in a huge motorhome and a light truck across the great plains. Three of us in the RV and the plan was to drive through a tankfull of gas, fill up, wake the next driver and then get some kip. I was new to this game and it took a little while for me to figure that my Canadian mates would just wait till the others were spark out, stop and top off the gas and claim they had done a tankfull:eek:
In the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere the ploy worked well!
That was a long drive!

Just did the A1/M1 last night - all the way from London to Edinburgh .

I had driven various lengths of it before , but never all of it in one go ( with a couple of rest stops along the way ) .

The long stretches of 50mph roadworks make it more of a mission than usual at the moment.

Thats the slower way, you want to take the A73 route, join the a74 and head down the M6. @ Brum I'd recommend taking the M40 to London, not the M1 unless your heading to the north or east of the city.

Drive quite often to Hamburg either from the tunnel or from the hook, stopping at Bremen, Buxtehude, Antwerp and Rotterdam on the way

Last year we drove 900 miles across Russia from Vladimir (just east of Moscow) to Syzran a city down on the Volga river! Not a huge distance compared to some, but the roads are hellish and the levels of concentration needed are phenomenal! If my brave little Nissan Sylphy is up to it, we'll be doing it again this year and maybe adding a further 600 miles to go and visit Kazan also! (I must be a masochist!!) :D
