Long drives

I went down via the M74,M6,M40,M1,M25,M20 to Kent .

Since I was going to my mother's house just outside Edinburgh , I decided to come back up the East Coast instead of returning the same way , since we were going to be too late to help Jumbobeef out anyway . Even with the 50mph stretches - it was still about 10 hours of driving , not counting breaks . The biggest delay both ways was the Dartford crossing/ tunnel . The M1/A1 is much more scenic than the other way .

2 weeks time - Suffolk to Penzance and back. Towing a sailing boat - it's the class national championships at Mounts Bay - looking forward to the sailing, if not the drive

Esox where were them pics taken the roads in that valley look fantastic:)

You could have popped in for a cuppa I only live 2 miles off the A1 at Doncaster :D

Just done Bristol to Skye and back in my trusty W123, clocking about 1400 miles in a week. Great roads in N. Scotland and the car didn't miss a beat.

Next month we are off to Arezzo in Italy in my other half's R170 SLK which won out over the C124, should be around 3,000 Km in all I would think. Just need to get it serviced and we'll be good to go!

Longest drive was from Barrow, Alaska down through Canada to Iowa in the US - that trip was truly awesome.

drove car with caravan from scotland to dorset a couple of weeks ago. 60mph all the way there. stopped at lake district on the way back up.

Most fun long Journey, EVERYTIME for me is the NurBurgring..
I love a god convoy to an amazing place.

This year has been one long drive.

25,000 miles since January!

Fantastic roads, one of my favourites is the A87 from Invergarry to the Kyle of Lochalsh. Did you head towards Torridon or Ullapool? Lovely sweeping roads up there too :D

Top pic is taken looking towards the summit of the Stelvio Pass (SS38 in Italy) looking west; next pic is looking down from the summit looking west again, in the direction of Bormio. This should give you an idea of where it is :thumb:

If you're up that way, don't go past Glen Garry on the main road. Turn off left (if you're heading north) into the Glen, and go to the end of the road about 20-25 miles. It gets a bit hairy towards the end, but what a road!
Then you can turn round and enjoy all of the scenery from a different perspective.

And if you're in the Torridon area, don't miss the Bealach na Ba - one of the best drives in the country.

Yeah,what St13phil said!

Yep,Scotland is quite good,too.No need to go abroad when you have scenery like this;

Plymouth to Singapore via Suez Canal approx 8,000 miles.
Mind you I was helmsman on HMS Ark Royal, Does this count?????

I covered 6,500 miles in 3 weeks when I went to Sweden/Norway/Finland.

I did about 5,000 miles when I did Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and back.

Both where fun, they are the longest trips I've covered so far.

Longest single trip I drove in one go was 3300 miles: San Francisco-Los Angeles-Greenville North Carolina-Washington DC, in a Peterbilt 18 wheeler, 2 drivers, stopping only for food/fuel and tip/reload. Mainly on I-40. Nearly every town we passed had a song about it.

Long Trips

2005:UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia to Moscow and back: 6,000 miles + 1,500 driving around western Russia.
Best Run 1,200 miles in 24 hours.

2007:UK, France, Switzerland, Italy[Prato], France, Spain[Barcelona], France, Italy, Sicily, Italy, France, UK.
A very strange trip where the Barcelona meeting was changed at the last minute which messed up my schedule!

2007: UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and back 4,000 miles + 1,500 driving around western Russia.
Polish roads were rubbish except for the A2 motorway.

2008: UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK
The fjords were magnificent - didn't see any parrots though!

2009: As 2007 Baltic trip.

So yes, I do like driving. Fondest memory was my son (then aged 5) in 2005 asking me (two hours from Moscow) Are we going to get to London soon? Only another week I replied.

We went up via the Kyle but came back on the boat to Mallaig - I prefer the boat as it breaks up the journey and feels more like a proper holiday! The best driving IMO is on Skye itself - the road from Sligahan to Dunvegan. A real pleasure in driving to Ft William is stopping for lunch at the Real Food cafe in Tyndrum - they do superb fish & chips.

Ah! the Norwegian Blue Lovely bird. Beautiful plumage. A rare sight I believe.
