Longlife Basingstoke doing my Cat delete

Apparently so.

Thats the route i will be taking anyway when the time comes.

Last thing you want is for it to fail on a missing cat and then have a big bill for sourcing one just to get it through an MOT.

Drop the cats , cut open the top ( so the cuts can't be seen when under the car ) , pull out the insides , weld back up.

Cunning, as for insurance would you still declare this and would you simply declare it as decatted?

So taking out the insides as mentioned before to make it look like it still has cats would pass the mot as the tester would think it has them?

Provided it still meets the emissions test, yes.

The new regs only applied from April this year so there's a bit of uncertainty. I'm happy to wait a bit longer to see how they're being applied in practice. I am inclined to believe that provided the car still has *some* cats and meets the emissions it will be OK. Otherwise any car with a modified exhaust (sports cats etc.) is going to be off the road.

As mentioned most insurance companies (certainly online) don't want to know any details - just that it has a 'modified' exhaust system. If the only change is to remove the internals of the cats then you'd probably get away with not declaring it, if you were that way inclined. Any sections of shiny stainless steel pipe are a bit more obvious though!

OK

On my 55 estate I had the secondary cats and resonator opened up with a disc cutter (like a cat flap - couldn't resist that)

Innards were scooped out, then the flaps were pushed back up and welded.

Car passed MOT without issue at a strict MOT tester. Emmisions were absolutely fine.

Under the car you do not see the welds. Once the exhaust gets a bit dirty I think you would not look for it.

So in short I did not have the exhaust dropped.

Just to be clear, there are no MOT implications in removing the resonator. Taking the innards out could be easier/cheaper than replacing it with pipe though, and would be less obvious for insurance (if you weren't going to declare it).

Do you have a video fo how it sounds like please?

No sorry I have no video.

It is not boomy (so I don't get invites to the local supermarket car-park along with the Barry Boys).

Motorways it is not intrusive. Boot it and it sounds absolutely awesome. Like a V8 should sound it has a definite rip and burble. Tunnels are just the fun place to drive.

I'd be very interested to see (hear?) the outcome of this.

I'd like to give my W211 E55 a bit more of a voice and this sounds like it might be a good way to achieve it.

£100 seems very cheap and without wanted to be sceptical it sounds too good to be true. Especially fitted.

I've got a PCS decat and it is mega. Car sounds epic.

I agree, but I'm also quite willing to walk away if they start taking the piss.

I'll post videos and phots once it's done....if I get it done. :D

I found these guys via the Internet when I feared my rattling exhaust was the cats...

I guess Matt is the guy you will have spoken with and I had then look at my (far less exciting) E240 - he turned what could have been a very expensive job into just £40 (inc VAT) for welding on two stainless steel exhaust hangers and re-attaching the linkage between the two pipes.

On the back of my positive experience, I'd definitely recommend them - just make sure you don't go to the first exhaust place you see on the estate where they are based (I did!).

Thanks for taking the time to post feedback. It was Matt I spoke to and he seemed very nice.

You can go to most custom exhaust places and they will make you one. The quality will vary though. I'm using Longlife a I've heard good things about them, however, I believe they are a franchise so no gaurentees the work will be perfect. I just hope that there actually will be gaurentees that I can get any problems sorted by them if something goes wrong.

Just back from PCS. Big thumbs up for Ollie and his crew. They certainly know their stuff, well worth the 2 hour drive.

Whilst there, this seems to have happened somehow too....

It now sounds like a V8 ought to, very happy!!

Congrats mate. I knew there was no way you'd be able to resist the beautiful look of the exhaust. An of course the sound. Amazing isn't it?!
