At the end of the year I will be looking to buy another car for long drives.

I am considering the following cars:

- S320 CDi W221 (07+)
- Jaguar XF 2.7 TD
- BMW F10 520d touring or saloon

Will be diesel, ultimately want something extremely comfortable & decent MPG. The S320 CDi particularly appeals for this reason (airmatic/great seats), so does the XF.

I love the aesthetics of the F10 5 series, but not sure how comfortable it would be on long drives.

Not particularly bothered about maintenance costs, but would appreciate feedback on common faults etc.

If anyone owns/has owned any of the aforementioned cars, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Abs

The S class should fit the bill for comfort. No idea how the BMW or Jaaaag rides.
Time for some test drives:banana:

I always fancied a Jaaaaaaag ;)

I think either will be great for long drives though, at the moment it looks like either the S class or Jag.

Hi Abs, the XJ Sovereign is very nice and the 2.7 is the one to go for imo - now down to about £5,000 + - very good 6 speed auto as well. Always on air suspenders and not complicated or expensive to fix.

Have a look here :

jaguar xj 2.7 Sovereign diesel | eBay

Engine needs a cambelt and fuel pump belt every 105,000.

Absolutely perfick for your needs.

PS Full aluminium body as well, so no rust.

Wow thanks for that! Hadn’t thought of that, one to add to the list! Air suspension is a must! :)

Riding in an XJ is nothing less than magic. And the relationship between the 2.7 diesel (which is often remapped!) and the gearbox is just a dream.
Fuel consumption about mid 30's day to day and over 40 on a run - so long as you run at 70, tyres pumped correctly, clean air filter ;);););););).

Understated Elegance.

Actually the engine was developed by Ford/PSA and modified for applications in Citroen/Peugeot/Ford/Jaguar and Land Rover engines.

No thanks going on previous experience, But thanks for the pointer it may help the Op :thumb:

What’s the budget?

If XF, I’d recommend the 3.0 twin turbo diesel if you can afford it - fantastic ZF 6 speed ‘box, 275bhp and 50+mpg, very smooth ride yet never feels wobbly, mine is on 20” wheels and, to drive it, you’d think they were 18”.

I'm certainly intrigued by the comfort of the S Class. It's the car I'm planning to replace my E320 (W211) with purely for a step up in comfort. Can't think there's many cars that would beat an S Class for covering long distances.

3.0 is normally 240bhp but can in 'S' form be 275bhp. Obviously 'S' model is more expensive.

Had the XF 3.0s 275bhp remapped to 340bhp, absolutely awesome power delivery and pace and comfort. Had 3 years then one of the turbos went pop, major job and always change both while at it so part chopped for now owed Merc. Miss the power of the jag but diesel now becoming the devils fuel so petrol for me as I do very little miles. The XF thou a good car and choice , I would choose the pre face lift 2011 as I think there better looking and obviously cheaper.

Aren't the electronics a bit jumpy on JLR stuff - especially an old XF?

I did like the 2014 XF 3.0 TT oiler I drove a couple of years ago apart from the front seats didn't suit!

Earlier Jag S-types had suspect electro's, but the XJ's were always pretty good, but as always on any modernish car they are full of electrons so good batteries are ESSENTIAL.

XF's are essentially Fords, so their electronics are good.

Besides the slightly laggy sat nav, I’ve had no bother with any of the electrics in the three XF’s I’ve owned?
