Car
German oil burner
as the title says,

was trying to overtake the other day and the car sounded asthmatic and had a serious power deficit and started to smoke a bit. now it smokes under any kind of acceleration or load and its generally weak. the turbo spool is now very audible. consumption gone up a bit, the engine is running fine, no hesitation and it will always start.

have a feeling theres a loose turbo pipe somewhere.

Also this morning i started it to see if i could find the source of the problem, squeezed the main turbo pipe to provoke a reaction, and i certainly got one, thick black liquid came pouring out of the exhaust. alarming quantity, but this substance is viscous, like oil or diesel, but absolutely NO odur.

whats going on?

I had the same kind of issue with my Audi.
On initial inspection they thought it was something simple as the air mass sensor however turned out to be a fault with the Exhaust Re-Circulation Valve (ERG).

It if it smoke but still running it don't sound like anything too major... The smoke you are seeing is likely to be un-burnt fuel.

I wanted to think that too, but apparently my remap includes some kind of software which bypasses the EGR valve.... i'm not sure how to check this is actually true but that's what I was told...

Sounds like a split boost hose or induction leak to me. Try squirting brake cleaner on the hoses while its running to see if the idle speed rises.

Over-fuelling would give black smoke. Grey smoke sounds like oil from the turbo.

yep... the turbo is gone... whats the best way to go? recon or second hand unit?

it needed 1ltr of oil this morning.... the turbo must be eating it and throwing it out the back

i ran it for about another 10miles too... but the engine sounds and seems to run fine sooo fingers crossed

any recommendations?

Who did you remap it with? could it be down to the remap?

If so take it back to them and tell them to sort it.

ive done 19k miles since i had it remapped, im sure the remap has shortened its life... but thats the risk i knew i was taking when i had it remapped. i want to try to get a newish or well-reconditioned unit so it will last for at least another 50-60k

question: does anyone know if the turbo from the newer polo 1.4tdi will fit? im gona do some googling

You'll need a new cat and exhaust too.

The joys of remapping...

What temps have you been seeing...you have fitted an EGT gauge, haven't you?

new exhaust and cat because of the oil coming through? i thought so too - will probably cut it out

didnt think about an egt because i thought remapping diesels is so common and most people dont have major issues. i would like to blame the remap but it has been running as good as a car can be really - just suddenly lost power while overtaking!

thats funny nick , just put my reg no in the ecp website and they do 1 for 15 quid... should just buy it!

Why will you need a new exhaust, or Cat come to that, though the cat may be irrecoverably blocked which will cause EGT to go even higher than the statasphoric ones you already have.

What has happened is the turbo has been getting too hot, the blades melt then it stops providing adequate air, this in turn raises temperatures more as you ask for more power until eventually the turbo shaft and bearings overheat and BOOM...

This will have been building since the map was first done.

With the amount of additional fuel you have added with no more air, I bet the EGT have been over 1000c when hoofing it.

That £50 gauge has never seemed so cheap.

Sorry to sound like a doom-monger, but you should always fit an EGT gauge if remapping a car, especially a diesel as all the map does is add more fuel.
