lots of grey smoke, no power, hissing noise

new exhaust and cat because of the oil coming through? i thought so too - will probably cut it out

didnt think about an egt because i thought remapping diesels is so common and most people dont have major issues. i would like to blame the remap but it has been running as good as a car can be really - just suddenly lost power while overtaking!

Remember the MOT issues if you bin the cat.

I'd shop for a used turbo and a used exhaust.

From a quick google search it does not look like turbos are a big problem with these, so a used one should be cheap enough, cat might be expensive though.

There is no MOT test for a diesel cat at present so just empty the case out.

The oil in the exhaust will just burn off once it gets hot enough, trust me, I've done it.

makes sense Will, but i've been thinking - what about a skoda Vrs turbo...? :)

the egt gauge sounds like a good cheap investment too

You can't go wrong...honest they are very good cars and good VFM too.

The Police seem to think they are good enough for high speed motorway pursuit car. Saw one in action a few weeks ago...shame the other driver didn't realise.

need to make sure it will fit

what will the egt help me do?

stop hoofing it when it gets hot?

just speculating - trying to see the cup as half full rather than half empty

i think i'll fix it and map it down so it doesnt cook another turbo for now

In essence, yes. It will get hot very quickly (seconds), but at least you will know, but also you can then tailor your driving style and future mods to bring temps back down.

more air = cooler temps
more fuel = hotter temps.

Out of interest how would you calibrate the EGT sensor? As in, how would you know at what temperatures you're exceeding a sensible range. Would it be a fixed % higher than what you see at motorway speeds for example?

A normally accepted figure is ~750c, the hotter you go above that the more damage will be done and it's cumulative, so a bit at a time until...

Motorway speeds are generally 270-350c.

intercooler was the next thing i had in mind, but its hard to find

In what way, just whack any larger cooler on. All 1.9's have an intercooler so that would do, but also you need to improve flow.
Flow is much more important than turbo pressure as pressure increases charge temperature, flow reduces it.
Big intake pipes with no restriction, big exhaust with no restriction...all measured with a vacuum or pressure gauge.

Sorry, I know, that's all boring stuff...just remap it...it will all be OK...:o

well with the intercooler i would have tried to see what i could do with the induction system as u say, was just being vague.

i havent got the turbo out yet to have a look but i think the seals have failed hence why its pulling thru engine oil and chucking it out the back

one would have thought id lose power immediately if the seals failed to a considerable degree... no? the louder spooling noises i was hearing... bearing on its way too?
