Lovely CLK430 Cab

The owner of the the black one I mentioned above, sorry I can't get an link, is about to sell it for £6500 having advertised for £8999! He said it has a problem with the roof opening

Roof problem could be big money to fix though.

The pump for the roof ( if it has gone ) is over £1800 on its own. Add on fitting to that ( complicated and fiddley ) and you could easily spend £2500 on sorting it ....

One thing to make sure of when buying a w208 cabrio ...... make sure the roof works properly ...

Roof control modules are £000s too. So IMO you need to be pretty sure of what the problem is before buying.

Sounds like enough to put anyone off buying a Cab!

Seriously , you need to find out exactly what is wrong with it .....

I don't mean to sound like a doom-monger ..... sorry .....

Any convertible with a power-operated hood has a whole load of extra stuff that might go wrong one day, compared to a coupe. Buying one that's not working properly in the first place though is a real gamble!

I am seriously interested in this 430 Cab now. I am not going to get a decent low miles CLK55 for the money I am prepared to pay and in the time I have available. I have also received some useful words of warning about older AMGs which will probably have been driven hard and will be expensive to maintain.

Although this is for sale at £9500, it is mine for £8500. It is taxed and tested, serviced this week (I have asked for details) and has a FSH. Bit short on kit, if I buy it I will see how much Comand retrofit costs. I am not going to be able to view it before next week. Does anyone live near Bath/Bristol who would be happy to have a look at it for me?

It has a non standard head unit, I think someone said it has Bose, how do you tell?

No heated seats either....?

Isn't the bose sub behind the rear armrest ?

It does look nice mind.

Seems to sit too high

Those aren't the wheels it came with , they are w209 alloys. Very rare indeed that late model wheels work on an earlier model .

Get the VIN and look up if it has Bose or not , our blue CLK has Bose and the rear speakers are marked with Bose logos , but the cabrio doesn't have speakers on the rear shelf. All cabs have a sub behind the rear armrest even those without Bose. Look for logos on the speaker grilles.

Other than the wheels ( which i'm not sure about ) and the stick on spoiler on the back it does look a nice car !

Get the VIN and see what it's got !

Thanks Howard, I have asked him for the VIN. I have also asked for assurance that the wheels are genuine MB/AMG - have to say that they really 'make' the car and give it a much more modern look. I know what you mean when you say it looks like it is riding quite high, but its not something I know anything about.

These are the closest I can find for genuine AMG alloys, they are 19" AMG III s. Not sure if the ones on the 430 are 19" or 18".

I would think looking at the pictures they are 18". I also would assume they are replicas, reason being they do look almost brand new and probably put on for sale as they do make it look good.

On an £8.5K car I doubt the previous owner or garage would have spent £2K just for wheels and tyres to help sell it?

Also my last car had 19" alloys and the tyres look smaller profile? they were 35 profile.

After you GL this CLK will band down pot holes, I find my wifes A210 after my ML is a very hard ride. I actually thought the BM with 19's was quite a nice ride but if I jumped in it now I bet it would feel harsh...

Has the jag gone :)

Thanks, I agree, they don't look like 19"s. I also had 19"s on my BMW E92 335d M Sport - V hard ride. I suspect the CLK will ride like the Mini, 17" alloys with runflats which = hard ride!

I will see what the trader comes back and says about the alloys, he told me that the tyres are 'as new' what adds credence to the fact that they may have just been put on.

Hopefully Jag will be gone by tomorrow PM and I will have a wedge of cash burning a hole in my pocket!

Looking at it , that is definately a Bose logo on the subwoofer under the rear armrest ..... this is a good sign.

Those wheels look like they have the AMG engraving on them , but it's hard to tell from the pictures ( there are copies out there with AME on them ;) ) , but it's entirely possible that they will be real.

I just can't stop thinking that it is sitting too high , it's a Avantgarde ( that has lower suspension than the Elegance to begin with ) , so should sit a bit lower ....

We have a set of 18's on our other 430 , and while that does sit a bit high ( bigger alloys with low profiles and no lowering can do this ) it doesn't seem to be as high as your silver one ....

I thought BOSE didn't work with non MB headunits .. something to do the fibre optic system or some such

find out what kind of tyres they are .. new tyres can be the mega budget brand variety

for the money I prefer the 210 E55 that's on sale on the forum

I think that the car is crying out for a COMAND retrofit! I have sent to car trader another email asking lots more detailed questions, including the origin of the alloys and the make of tyre.

I do like Adrian's E55, it looks fantastic (and looking forward to seeing some more pictures) but it is a big saloon and I want a 2 door coupe/cab.

Cash buyer yet peter ?

(has the jag gone) :)

Nice position to be in at the moment, cash is king and the type of cars you are looking at there is a big gap between asking price and selling price ?

Have you gone off the idea of a new shape tin top CLK500 ?

Controls etc will be more in keeping with what your use to in the GL?

I can understand the pull to a convertible I miss mine....

The Jag is history, if ever I mention getting a Jag again (unless it is a new shape XK Coupe/Cab of course) please, can any of you fine people find me and put me out of my misery! (I mean it :D ).

Cash is burning a hole in my pocket already, there is a practical need for me to get another car relatively quickly so I need to keep impulse buying firmly in check. I am still open to getting a CLK 500 Coupe or Cab (but Cab likely to be out of the price range) or a CLK430 (prob Cab), which fuflils the V8 brief, but is not one I thought of before as it is the old W208 shape. If the right shape CLK55 appears I would also be seriously interested - but it has to be 'right'. I have to say that I am still very interested in the silver CLK430 Cab. I am waiting for the Trader to get back to me on monday (he is away for the w/e) with the answers to my detailed questions, and I need to check out the service history next week. I might take a trip to Bristol next week to look at it.

Can you not use one of your cars? you don't want to rush anything but then I can also understand with the money now ready you will want one on your drive :)

Glad to hear you sold the Jag and all went well.
