M25 Speed cameras

Just read through all of this thread, which started back in 2010. Many people are giving the opinion that the cameras on the M25 (and more recently mentioned M1) aren't registering speeding above the NSL (70mph). Or anyway that tickets aren't being issued. My old boss had two tickets a couple of months apart on the M3 to M40 stretch of the M25 with no restrictions shown on the gantries. One was for 85 and the other for 86mph. I've taken that as a warning to keep my speed below 80 all round that western section. I've had a clean licence for 50 years and want to keep it that way!

I know what you mean. Im proud of never having an accident/points but its only a matter of time.

I dont speed out of habit but feel do get caught out a few times. For example, I was travelling in Bradford down a road I thought was 40mph, I was doing 37, went past a Truvelo only to see a big 30 sign a few meters after. That was a month ago and have not heard anything.

What really annoys me is not the fine and the points but the insurance implications. I ran a mock price comparison website the other day with 3 points should it ever happen. It worked out at £560 over 5 years extra I would pay. Didnt dare try it with 6 points . That is a totally disproportionate penalty for the offence.

OUCH. I'll be taking even more notice of the clever speed limit warning that flashes up on the dash every time I pass a sign. Annoying when I want to look at a different bit of info at the time, but useful!

Are you talking about a snooper? I am very tempted at investing in one of these. It could be a worthwhile investment.

No, it's the Mercedes "Speed Limit Assist" that reads the speed limit signs and displays them for a few seconds in the centre of the speedo. It also shows the limit continuously on the COMAND sat nav and compares it with map data. One of the multitude of aids that MB now fit, mostly as standard. It's particularly good in areas where the limit is temporarily reduced, such as through road works. It also reads variable signs on overhead gantries. Damn clever!

That is impressive...but I would trade that in for cars that dont rust and just use my eyes. ;)

Anyway I was looking at devices that detect camera sensors, radars or what ever they are and most of them seem only to be memory banks of preloaded data or at best connect to the internet for live updates. Pretty useless when trying to see which ones are live or which ones are moved around.

When I started driving that stretch in 1996 onwards on and off (until 2007) and I stuck to around 80 normally as I wasn't comfortable that they wouldn't get you at anymore - despite the best knowledge I could find in the late 90s suggesting they only did you if the restriction was on...

I did ahem and twenty through the first two sets northbound in 1997, but the first two weren't the 'live' one as they were missing the three pronged aerial (luckily).
