Has anyone got it (either on an SLK or an SL)? If so, what are your impressions? Useful feature or frivolous gimmick? Is it as much of a must-have for one of these models as Airscarf is? Or is it essentially a waste of £2000? If you've got it, how often do you use it, and under what circumstances? And would you specify it again on your next car?

I had the pleasure of an SL for a day with it - clever toy and it does brighten up the cabin.

Best way to describe it is that it behaves just the same as the slidey cover for a sunroof on a hardtop car. Would you pay £2000 for that?

Saying that, it is a wonderful toy and a talking point for passengers etc.

The magic sky control looks cool but at £2000 probably a little pricey but if your picking one up new you probably don't care, certainly something to look for if your picking one up second hand.

I really like the new magic vision. would it be an easy retrofit to an R230? there is probably a lot more to it than just rerouting some fluid pipes as everything is heated but would be great if somebody who knew could wade in.

Thanks.

My wife opted for the non-magic pano roof (in fact it is mandated for the Diamond White colour she chose), which makes the cabin feel significantly more airy. Also a nice contrast externally with light paintwork. She can even emulate the "Clear" mode of magic sky by dropping the roof.:D

Even the sales guy seemed to think the magic sky option a bit gimmicky.

That said, certainly a bonus when buying used and even new it's just one of many ways to spend a little more, that over a longish period of ownership might feel less extravagant (like the Diamond White colour- ouch!).

Hmm, trouble is that that kind of thinking can see the cost of an SLK climb to the dizzying heights of £83,000.

I was surprised to learn that the R172 has a glass roof as standard, but fitted with an internal headlining. The panoramic roof option removes the headlining and replaces the glass with polycarbonate.

Incidentally, has your wife ever found the panoramic option provides too little protection from the sun, or does it do a pretty good job of letting in light while controlling excessive heat? And does it lead to impaired visibility of instruments or stray reflections on particularly bright days?

Still keen to hear from owners that have MSC fitted, and in particular whether they use it. When I bought my W168 A-Class just after it had been launched, it seemed important to specify the louvred sunroof as it was such a defining feature of the car, but I only used it a handful of times during the four-and-a-half years I had the car. In hindsight I wouldn't have bothered.

Yep, that online configurator (or configurer if it hadn't been created by our friends in the US) sure is a heartbreaker! But I think if there's a next time she might add heated seats & washers and perhaps airscarf.

Interesting- wonder why they don't just use polycarb every time.

Chance would be a fine thing- only had it since late Nov! Certainly none of those issues have arisen yet.

The 'configurator' cushions the blow by excluding various options, so I resorted to the printed price list. Scary stuff.

Your wife ordered an SLK without Airscarf?! That's worthy of a Bateman. :)

Don't add to my guilt- despite it being her own money, I still talked her out of it and heated seats, promising her a hot water bottle and balaclava if she felt the need.

Had to google Bateman- I could only think of beer...

I fear we may have strayed into material more suited to a different kind of forum... :D

Made me chuckle, though. :)
