mass air sensor query

My local garage tells me I need a new mass air sensor (car loosing power - usually when pulling off or going up hills), but that they cannot do it as it needs a code entering into it that only Mercedes can do.

Is this right? It's not that I don't belive the mechanic - who is usually brilliant, but that taking it to the Merc dealer sounds even more pricey than it's going to be already (it's an A160 in case this is relevant), and I'd rather stay with the people I know and trust than go to a new place.

thanks in advance

ON THE A CLASS petrol the air mass sensor is built into the engine management control unit and is a common problem....
changing this means it has to be ordered to chassis number by your local dealer and then coded to your vehicle which can only be done by a dealership.

i have heard of these unit being repaired before by a independent company but do not know there name try searching google

thanks - that looks interesting, definately worth further investigation.
