Maybe selling my car

Thanks for your help!
Iv set my budget to around £9500, I need 26mpg roughly. I do want a 4x4 I love the hight of them. However I do want it look nice. Iv had a lot of comments on my Merc and I don't want to end up with a uncool looking car. I would love a Merc , Range Rover or Audi 4x4 but I just worry if anything goes wrong then massive bill!
So far I have looked online at
Volvo XC90
Volvo XC60
Honda CR-V
Volkswagen Touareg
Just can't decide. Main thing is it looks nice lol

Also want at least 150bhp nothing 2 slow! Any ideas I would really appreciate! What 4x4 would suit someone in there 20s ? I don't want a girly looking 4x4

Just worry that if I get a Merc 4x4 and stuff goes wrong then the bills are going to be huge!!!
I would love one but couldn't handle 2k Bill lol

Sounds to me like affordability is key here.

We could shout out all sorts of vehicles but if you know you're not going to be able to run the majority of them, then there's not much point.

My advice is look at what you can afford to spend, look at what you can afford to maintain it and go from there.

Sounds like wanting something fast and good looking should be lower down on your priority list if maintenance is going to be an issue.

I worked with CR-Vs a few years back and my overriding feeling was that it would be easy to do better, but equally reliability is solid and they're not too expensive, although some Jap parts can be if they need to be shipped from Japan, meaning lead time can also be quite long, although Toyota seems the worst at this.

I would lean towards the Audi Q5 or Q3, or the Volvo XC60. The 2.0 TDI 170 in the Audis is pretty economical and quick enough, and their autos are good if that is a requirement. Good independent network and many of the parts will appear on far more humble VWs, so not hugely expensive.

With the XC60 if you can find a manual 181bhp D4 with AWD that would be good and return 50+ mpg if driven carefully. Perceived quality not what it once was, but still fairly decent mechanically.

XC90 would seem to fit the bill and budget, also the Polestar tune (Volvo dealer install) would push the D5 north of 200bhp (I've got it on my C30).

Another option would be a Jeep Cherokee, I believe some even have a Mercedes engine...or so I've been told (diesel one at least).

If you want a 4X4 that looks like a 4X4 and reliable (thus cheap to run) take a look at a Toyota RAV4......or even a Lexus RX.......seriously reliable, nice to drive and look good.

Yes, in the Grand Cherokee the V6 CRD is the Merc OM642

Yup, that's the one my sister-in-law has. Great engine but the rest of thing seems to have been built by the lowest bidder. It's nice enough looking though and has loads of gadgets....as long as they work :)

Toyota Hilux.

Tie it to a tree, drive in the opposite direction and you can change the earth's rotational direction with one of those.

What about a Freelander?

Current version seems reliable. I have a pal who is a motor trader who runs them and tells me that the diesel auto set up is good.

Higher spec models will feel a lot more luxurious than the base models.

The thing is you're hoping for 26mpg? In any of these 6 cylinder diesel 4x4's you won't even get that on a run. Range Rover 3.0td6 real world is 23 on a run and 18 around town, jeep Cherokee 3.0 crd is worse, xc90 I never saw above 25mpg, you get the gist. I've actually owned all of them including x5's. Fantastic cars but if fuel economy is on your mind forget them. Don't be fooled into thinking "but it's diesel" it cost me more to drive to London in my Range Rover than my cls55.

Thanks guys for your help, just trying to get thes best for my money and to keep my fella happy as I do like to spend

Regarding the Audi what would you compare it to for parts repair prices ? More expensive than a Volvo ?
If you're looking at a £9500 Audi Q7 it will be a huge mileage thing bound to go wrong. Parts on a q7 won't be cheap and servicing won't be either. Nothing is cheap on these things. Maybe look towards. Freelander or other 2.0 diesel smaller 4x4's... Others have mentioned it, the quashqi or however it's spelt is a very good car, I've heard nothing but good news about them

What about a nice double cab pick up? Most have over 150bhp mine does 35MPG and they are not a bad drive either...and an enormous boot :thumb:

Tony.
