- Mercedes ML 320 CDI W164 KEYLESS GO / (NOW WITH STAR)
My friend has a ML320 petrol only done 88K on the clock, he is the first owner from new.
He was driving the ML on his way home and the next time he went to start it it wouldn't start. It felt like it wanted to start but it wouldn't.
I called guy round to hook up his laptop to the ML to find that the fuel pump had gone.
So here I go and I just had to help my mate out as it sounded like a expensive job.
The pump brand new was £235 plus VAT
Apparantly the fuel pump fits inside the tank and is a sender unit and pump all in one.
So had to remove the left back double seat out. Disconect the battery.
This is very dangerous and there is fuel in the tank. You may need to drain the tank. I was careful and I didn't empty the tank.
I managed to put the back seat directly in the back. Watch out for the trim around the bottom of the seat, be carful not to break it.
After the seat is out of the way, you will see what looks like a lid of the paint tub. You need to take the sealant off around the edges and take the lid off.
After removing the sealant the lid comes off and you will see the pump.
In order to get the pump out, the ring around the pump need to be unscrewed Anti clockwise. You must be careful when undoing the pipes as you can damage them. Do not bend them. Undo the plug.
As the pump come out you will need to tilt pump out and it may conatin fuel, be careful as it may spill.
PUMP OUT
When Re-fitting the pump back be carefull not to damage the pump as it has the leaver of the fuel guage.
You must use the new seal that come with pump.
The seal must go on the tank rim first and then insert the pump into the tank.
I put the pump back in the same position as I took it out and putting the outer ring back can be a bit tricky. Make sure you tighten it properly.
put all the pipes and plug back.
At this point I wanted to check for leaks to what I did was to connect a red wire back to the back seat so the airbag light would not come on when I start.
connected the battery back up and went to start the car and WOW it started :bannana:. Good no leaks.
Switched it back off and disconnected the battery.
I put sealant back round the lid.
Let the sealant dry.
Ready to re-fit the seat back in and bingo. You saved a few quid.
I let the ML run for a bit, so all the air and get out of the pipes.
