Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

W114 steering and rear light face light

I am new to this forum and recently bought a W114 (2.3), but I am a bit confused as mine has the more modern steering wheel and 'ribbed' tail lights. Does anyone have an idea when Mercedes did these two upgrades on the W114?

As Charles who is now our resident W114 expert said and that link I posted tells you the changeover year was 1973. So your car is post the 1973 update
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W114

quote:-
The W114 received a facelift in 1973 - with a lower bonnet-line, lower and broader grill, a single front bumper to replace the double bumpers, lower placement of the headlamps, A-pillar treatment for keeping the side windows clear, removal of the quarter-windows in the front doors, ribbed tail lights to minimize occlusion of the tail lights with road dirt, and larger side mirrors. The interior received inertia reel belts and a new padded steering wheel with a four-hole design.

A 230.4 is not a W114, it's a W115 as it's a 4 cylinder.

Can I make a suggestion, I really would be quite delighted to talk about W114 / W115s etc in general in the General section of this forum, but this is a specific thread on my project car and I'd quite like it to remain that way. As I am going to be going through a whole load of info on Megasquirt programming I'd really like not to have regular off-topic discussion introduced please.

Was on the point of suggesting that Charles, but since it wasn't my thread didn't feel it was my place. Glad you cleared it up.

Annoyingly not able to get the screen print to work on my windows laptop, so will have to photograph each page laboriously. Also, my Volvo (which I park off the drive in the day to give me room to move the coupe outside) was hit sometime yesterday by one of the numerous drivers who treat my road as a race track. As I don't want another clout I don't want to move any car off the drive now, and I can't idle the coupe in the garage without excess CO in a confined space.

The joys of IT and local scum.

My Volvo is attracted to damage. Far more so than any other car I've ever had. It's annoying.

Excellent, Colin (Jackasti) has a set of two piece seatbelts from a coupe that should get me through the MOT from whence I can get the car over to Stanmore for three belt fitting.

Finally got hold of the mobile seatbelt fitters and they arrived today to fit three point inertia reel belts to the car, so she is now ready for an MOT. The driver's side belt is extra long for some reason...

Very useful having mobile fitters!

Just caught up with the thread so far - took me over two weeks of occasional reading. Like a Russian novel, this has everything. V8s and auto boxes come and go , numerous colour changes , efi brain teasers. And the car is a gem. My first classic was a 1971 250CE in silver and red - it was a mess in every respect but so pretty i shall remain a fan forever. Will continue reading with great interest. Wonderful work Charles and what a great supporting crew on the forum - truly inspiring.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your kind words Zohar. A rather organic and discursive thread but it kept largely to the main purpose and exhibited what can only be described as an exceptional level of helpfulness from so many. I just wish it wasn't winter time now so I could get her out for a good drive, but I think she's worth waiting a bit longer for.

Don't we just love bureaucracy, or the DVLA for short.

Earlier in the restoration I got a V5 for the car, which turned out to be registered in 1971, so historic for vehicle tax purposes - £0 per annum. Fast forward to the day after the MOT, when I tried to get the car taxed. Despite the vehicle clearly being shown as a 1971 car the online tax system asked if I'd like to pay for a year at £235 (can't recall the 6 month rate). Having tried to speak to the DVLA in person (don't bother calling the automated number 0300 123 4321) same answer from the speak your weight machine*.

Having finally spoken to a person on 0300 790 6802 apparently I now have to go into a post office with section 7 of the V5C tax class changed to Historic. Then the nice DVLA will send me another V5C. Isn't that lovely to think people are being gainfully employed doing things like this?

*it also told me I might be liable for not having taxed the vehicle since 1989. Utterly unfit for purpose, I feel a letter to my MP coming on.

Given the weather is getting bitter now, I doubt I need it taxed imminently however!

it also told me I might be liable for not having taxed the vehicle since 1989...

I'd like to hear how you get on with that, I have a vehicle in a similar situation

As always, the DVLA couldn't organise a gangbang in a whorehouse.

The RVR document states that if the vehicle was untaxed on 31st Jan 1998, no SORN is required.

Anyway the nice Mr Subpostmaster in Iver Post Office found it all a bit confusing, but he now has my V5C with amended tax class and I have a receipt showing I have tax on the car. An entirely unnecessary waste of everyone's time (although I think Mr Subpostmaster gets paid something) especially as the tax revenue is a big fat zero.

Sorry to hear about your latest issue with bureaucracy Charles.

On a positive note I had to renew my driving licence which I did online. The new one arrived, complete with a photograph used for my recent passport, 3 days after my application. Some things do work exceedingly well.

Fired her up this morning as my father, sister and brother in law came over to have a look and she started on the button with an external temperature of 0C. They all thought she looked fantastic but were denied any drive as there had been gritters out the night before.

Hopefully come January I'll get the closed idle sorted.
