Yet another batch of 6 hit my PC's this morning. So if you do not have Auto Update enabled off you go

Sigh.

I only had 1 update to apply on both my work PC (Win2k) and home PC (XP Pro)?

Just checked and yup 6 updates

Excel was actually number 1, but it had scrolled out of my view when I started typing. :o :o

  • Outlook Express
  • PowerPoint
  • Word 2002
  • Office XP
  • Windows Malicious Software Removal
  • Excel 2002

Hmmmn for some reason the auto-update hasn't popped up but there were new updates waiting, thanks for the heads up :)

PJH. Thanks for the heads up. There was nothing on the Windows Update site on 13/6 but the patches were there yesterday.

I've got auto update set but it's always handy to be able to choose the time when there's a big update around. With my recently upgraded broadband connection downloading was quite painless. :)

Yup, thanks for the heads up.

Anybody know what 'rules' are used by auto update functions? When I manually check Windows Update and Norton LiveUpdate I quite often find outstanding items ... even though both are set to update automatically. Both do update automatically from time to time, so it's not like the functionality isn't working at all!

Out of interest, how does auto update work? Others on this thread have said thier auto update detected the update a day or so later, in our office, we run two pc's through a Netgear router. Mine has updated, my co directors has not.

I have got Auto Update but it never picked up on the Updates (may have something to with the Norton Anti virus Settings) on my PC which I will adjust/play with.

I went on to the MS site and in total 8 security updates were needed and were successfully installed.

Geoff: If you go to the MS site and manullay scan your computer for latest Updates then on the right hand side of your screen it will give you an option to select Auto Updates with instructions...;)

Incidentally, we've just been advised at work that there are "critical" updates for Word 2000 and PowerPoint 2000 too that need to be picked up separately
Furthermore, Microsoft have also released TWO CRITICAL patches for Word and Powerpoint which must also be installed. To install these patches, either click on "Office Family" at the top of the Windows Update introductory screen or go to http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/maincatalog.aspx?lc=en-gb. Select "Check for Updates". If this is the first time you have run Office Update, you will be asked if you want to install the "Office Update Installation Engine" - select "Yes". Select "Security Update for Powerpoint 2000(KB916520)" and "Security Update for Word 2000 (KB917345)" and click on "Agree and Install". You may also be asked if you have the original installation CDs - if so, select "No".

I've never run "Office Update" before, I will try it at home and see what it comes up with for my Office XP products.

Interestingly enough, I've got Office 2003 on my home PC and Windows Update detected it and sent the updates for Word and PowerPoint. My company laptop only received the Windows updates.

And the quickest way there, if you use IE6, is Tools>Windows Update.
From there you can set it up as you please - from fully auto to pop-up advising updates are available (my preference, so I can select what I want)
