Missing Stalk behind steering wheel?

Hi there, first time posting on the forum. I just bought a 1996 E230 and I dont know a lot about these cars and no manual came with it. There is a hole where a stalk/stem used to be just above the Left control stlak/stem behind the steering wheel at about 11 o clock. Could some body tell me what used to be there? I'm guessing it was for adjusting the steering wheel, as I cant seem to find anyway to move it. Any help is appreciated.

Hopefully you have got the answer to your query, but I would thoroughly recommend you buy a manual. Those of us with them tend not to read them enough, but not having one will be a real hassle.

Good luck
John

Sadly the manuals are not necessarilly in stock nor in print.

Correct but those that don't try will never get.

What manuals are still in print and available from main dealers?

Far better to be a half full type of guy rather than the usual can't be bothered option.

Each to their own :)

I suspect they are only on ebay as they didn't go with the car they came with. That's a neverending circle!

Recently got a Haynes manual for a 1987 190E easily enough from Halfords. My initial thought was it would be difficult but in fact, if you think about it the reverse applies as these are the very cars that now need more attention!

:)

Just reread - we talking handbook here as opposed to manual I guess

Ok, I think I've found out through the net that its the cruise-control stem, which is a pity as I was hoping it was for adjusting the steering wheel. I can do without cruise-control but I really need to adjust the steering wheel as its nearly sitting on my knees.I thought adjustable steering came as standard with the E230?

on the earlier cars , the seat was more adjustable. On the later cars they took some of the movement out the seat and made the wheel adjustable .

For the sake of the cost of the stalk, get it replaced!

Adjustable steering was an option and then probably only telescopic at a set angle.

yes but remember it may not work , someone may have broken it trying to get it to work or something!

I've seen a few 1996 E230's advertised on the net and they all seem to have adjustable steering, was this an option?Granted they all seem to be the Elegance model, but that is the model I have. Where is the lever that adjusts the steering situated?

on the W210 im sure there is a lever below the steering columb , if not there , check next to the parking brake to see if there is a small pushdown lever , but im sure thats only on the W202.
