ML 270 Rear Differential

Has anybody any experience regarding the life span of the differential, Mine makes a droning noise at approximately 50MPH above and below this speed it is relativity quiet with only the tyre/road noise coming through I have 95000 miles on the clock ! Would I need to replace the Diff ? any thoughts ?

Mine has covered circa 250k miles and no noises, though I have routinely changed the diff oils about 3 times during the 12yrs I've owned it........... I would drain off your diff oil(s) and see what condition the oil is in .......... I would suggest it more likely to be a wheel bearing on its way out, check also the prop centre bearing.

Many thanks panason1c have already changed all the oils in both diffs and gearbox previous owner said that the prop shaft bearing had been replaced before I got the car, I have tried driving hard around left and right hand corners to see if the noise gets louder but to no avail yet. Going to turn the radio up and run with it for a few months

I have never known one to fail. Are you sure its the diff?

..I fitted some fairly aggressive mud & snow tyres to my ML and it too now makes noises that sound like a bearing/diff/shaft noise. Recommend turning the stereo up a bit higher, that sorts it
