Hi all

My ML270 gearbox is playing up, its an 02 reg with the 722.6 box. When it changes up from 3rd to 4th gear it 'flares' (revs up then down) almost as if its in neutral for a second.

Had a gearbox ATF and filter change yesterday, which has made the gearchanges and 'feel' of the car much much smoother but it's still flaring the 3rd to 4th change. Any suggestions? Ideally I'd like to let it be for now (money shortage) but is it something that's likely to get much worse in a short space of time?

Thanks

Simon

My 210 is doing the same , though only when fully warmed , Ive also changed the ATF and filter but this didnt cure it either .I was gonna try some addative but have not got round to it yet .

I would suspect the cause to be the 'electro-hydraulic plate' inside the gearbox, this is easily removed/refitted just by dropping the tranny sump for access to it.

I was thinking it might be the a worn shift valve , I havent really looked into it , or even check what fault codes have been generated .

If changing the oil doesn't cure a flaring shift then suspect a failed clutch

Would this only cause the slipping when hot ?

Hi all

The fault has got worse now. Got the gearbox nice and warm tonight and it stopped changing into 4th and 5th completely. Turn the ignition off and on, fine for bit then same problem, plus the flaring. shed any more light?

Thanks

Simon

Ok so I took it to a specialist today who has ruled out the electroplate... He said the fault codes pointed to it being a hydraulic issue, not an electrical issue.

The solution may be to replace the valves, but as the garage have pointed out I could spend a great deal of money on labour in order to do this when at the end of the day its a gearbox with 134k miles on it. He has quoted £2700 to replace the gearbox with a reconditioned, warrantied one. Does this seem a reasonable price?

If this is the going rate then I may have to scrap the car and cut my loses :wallbash:

This happened to me a few years back - I took it to a transmission specialist and the changed the valve body to cure the problem. They also changed the electro-plate since this also often fails. All in with the fluid and new filter it cost me around £700

You could try giving these guys a ring They gave me alot of advise over the phone and then solved my problem for me.

I forgot to say: new valve bodies from MB are expensive, but TAS are one of the few specialists with a test rig who can repair and test them for a lot less. Although they are located in essex, they can test and repair valve bodies off the vehicle - making it feasible to do them by post.

As per my previous post, I suggested the 'electro-hydraulic' plate to be faulty, this plate includes the hydraulic valves, etc.
