Hi

A friend of mine is selling a 2001 ML270 last of pre-facelift. Dark green, black leather, factory privacy glass, 7 seater, Comand, opening rear windows. 60k miles. He has had it from new and it is in excellent condition and wants to sell without any hassle. In this climate what is i worth?? He has said he will give to me for £5.5K

It would be for the wife to replace her 1993 Pearl Blue 124 estate.

Am i mad considering it??

What are the views of the members?

Hello

Just had a look on Piston heads and traders are asking £6999 for similar cars. Markets shot to bits for these though so range all over the place. The Millage and spec is good so that helps.

Pre face lifted ones were meant to have a few issues although if he has had it since new its probably been looked after. My farther in law has a Pre facelifted one ML270 and its been great for him (80K plus miles).

Try and be cheeky and offer £5K. I think its a good price if you know the car / one owner and spec.

some idea of price?

Sounds reasonable. I paid double that recently for 2 years newer, 40,000 miles, no 7 seats but did get main dealer warranty
Would suggest buying a warranty with the saving you make!

The 7 seat options and command must be worth £1000.

Lots of people want the 7 seats even if you don't need them now (mine are in the loft)

You can get £500 for them on flea bay.

So if you did get it for £5000 and get £500 for them thats a very cheap car :)

Well I have just bought one, so I don't think you are mad, in fact a great car at a great price, especially if you are not doing many miles.

The colour and the prefacelift are the downers in the current market, diesel, 7 seats, one owner from new who you know are all pluses.

I would think 5k is about right, perhaps even a little high, but then you know where its been.

Hi

The thing is i would never have considered it only he mentioned it to me. Wife is happy about the 124 estate and has had it 5 years with very limited hassle. We have 5 kids and the 7 seat option is and would be used every day. I was thinking it was too much of a bargain to miss out on but obviously it isn't really based on market prices.

Oh it has sunroof and electric seats and Bose sound system and full MBSH.

Sounds like a good deal.
Good spec, and with full history, it must be worth it.

Also just realised that you are in NI, does that not put a bit of a premium on the car?

Perhaps you should bite his arm off, Sunroof is rare as well, so if you want it, go for it.

I think that after the ride quality of the w124 your wife would be disapointed with the bumpy ride in the 163, however the seats are very nice and so it the driving position, so that may compensate.

The ML has its downside that everybody loves to point out, its still however a bargin car to buy at the moment thats good offroad, comfy and has the badge.

I miss mine.

Command
Bose
Sunroof (is that the moon roof as they can cause issues but I like)
7 Seat

It certainly is a well speced one, I would go for it but then I'm biased I've had my ML for 18 months which for me is good going. Still love driving it.

Not sure about the hard ride? mines lovely and smooth. Wifes A210 with no profile tyres is hard. I cannot tell the difference in ride between mine and my dads E320cdi, ok mine leans more :)

Pre facelift are interesting to drive over speed bumps to say the least.

Update:

Wife took the ML out today to collect kids from school to see what it was like compared to her 124 Estate. The result is that yeh she likes the drive of the more modern and powerful ML but it is just too small for her needs. The 6th & 7th seats are very tight even with the rear seats moved forward, moving the rears forward also then makes the rear cramped. No room for shopping and just about squeezes a buggy in. Also smaller ones can't close the tailgate on their own, getting into 6th&7th seats is difficult through the rears because of boosters etc.

She is going to leave it i think, shame though as it is a beautiful well cared for vehicle, it is just too small.

Also Road tax will be £200/2009 and £430/2010 compared to her £185/2009 and £200/2010

The summary is that the rear facing E Class seats are more user friendly.

Does anyone else agree, has anyone else had the same comparison or need???

The spec sounds good - especially the 7 seat and command - however the colour may not be to everyones choice.

If you are planning on keepin it longer term than its good - as I am not sure the color will assist the sale.

Oh and on the motorway don't expect to reach near 3 figures comfortably (if at all)

Hello

I don't use the extra seat so ours has plenty of room. I can understand if you need the extra seats.

However with the 124 and kids in the back, surely your shopping / pram etc is on their knees?

The only 7 seater 4*4 is the Volvo XC90 or Disco (new GL but £££) almost all '7' seaters if all seats are being used there is little boot.

shame as you say probably a good buy for someone.

The 124 has plenty of room in the "footwell" of the boot that can take shopping and buggy while the kids are on board.

One of the clinching factors was manouverability of the 124 for the wife, the square corners and tight turning circle she really loves. The ML is very high up for little kids to climb into too.

It really is a shame because i have known this ML from new and always like it, the first set of tyres did over 50K miles it was that pampered. It will be a great buy for someone and such a pity that it doesnt suit our needs better. It is a steal at 5.5K!!! It has most of the available options.

I'd agree about the space in the boot in a 124 even with kids using the seats. Plenty of space down in the footwell.

We dont use them day in day out though....
