Most wonderful options for a new W211

That's interesting as I've never really understood why people went for the elegance over the avantgarde. To me the nicer alloys, beautiful dark work and those dials in the avantgarde really make the car, and the standard bi-xenons are worth the extra alone. I never found the ride anything less than perfect and although lower than standard it is not the same as the sports suspension option (486) which is harder.

RichardM, I agree with all that you have said, I think that the Avantgarde is really classy.

A friend had a nasty, thumbnail losing, experience with those on his S-Class. Mind you my father did similar when grabbing his seat belt with his left hand and closing the door with his right.

I was going to say, it's possible to get your fingers in the door on a standard setup as well ;).

The self-closing mechanism only engages when the door is pushed against the lock. It does prevent improperly closed doors but at the same time does not act so soon that it would constitute a danger in my experience.

Had them on my last two cars and love it. :)

Does anyone know if you can retro fit the electrically operated tailgate?

This question was asked quite recently and I believe the answer is that anything is possible but this would bean extremely expensive upgrade.

Braybrooks would be the people to give you the shock of your life  ;) If they so no, then you would be struggling. :)

Oh and welcome to this nice forum.

John

I have the self close mechanism and I only really use to show off to my poor friends who cant afford a merc, but different horses for different courses, however, I have to agree with Guido on the suspension, I have an S with airmatic and even with my bling 19" AMG wheels the road is extremely cushioned and quiet, even compared to my E class with 16" avantgardes and `standard` suspension, heaven knows what sort of quiet and refined ride Guido has on his 16`s, have you tried running somebody over who is lying in the road to see if you feel them??

Anything (just about) is possible. If you PM me your chassis number we can find out and give you a quote but I doubt for one minute that the parts alone will be cheap.

Make the cost public and then we can all gasp! in horror  :D

:o :o :o :o Hi Alfie,
Many apologies for not mentioning you. I never realised you were a tailgate man! (I was thinking about rear entrance but remembered your post about boyfriends)  :D

It's going downhill from here.......

You guys have just got to be there on Sunday - you owe it to your public :D Or even Saturday night for drinks :D

Quite a few of that public this weekend would be rather upset if we'd turn up and Rob hijacks all the conversations, me thinks :D.

Personally I would go for Elegance as the walnut and leather look spells pure luxury to me and the dials are much nicer than the rather naff silvery ones on the Avantgarde IMO.

The dials are actually white and look supurb in my opinion. Also it is personal taste but walnut looks great in older cars like my W124 Estate but very dated in the W211 elegance, much prefer the black IMHO

Also the Elegance ride is vastly better on the UK's under maintained road system -especially round here- than the 'sports style' ride on the avantgarde (for sport read harsh and bumpy!).

Never found this on my E320 CDI Avantgarde...very smooth on the road and nice and controlled on country lanes not at all harsh or bumpy. Mine is on 16" wheels though, and if you go to 17" wheels it is more harsh.

But the ultimate ride is, of course, the airmatic suspension which contributes hugely to the magic carpet ride on the S class that gets it chosen as best saloon in the world by so many motoring mags. It really is worth trying as it irons out ridges, ripples, bumps and potholes in a most exemplary manner. Nothing comes close IMO. You can switch between 'comfort' and 'sport' but even performance obsessed motoring journalists mainly agree just leave it in comfort as roll is minimal

Can't argue with you here hawk20, if you can afford it you have the best of both worlds....to sum up the avantgarde rather than the elegance does it for me. I also love the 4 zone digital climate, and would go for parktronic too. Good luck with your purchase.
