Hi gang,

Right , I have had the bad news .....

Its actually part of the chassis that has rusted out , where the subframe bolts on , the underseal has cracked at some point in the past and allowed water in , which has rusted badly....they will have to drop the rear subframe , diff and everything .

They can do it , for £500 ish  , but the even worse news is that they can't do it until the thursday after easter and they would want it for 2 or 3 days ....

Still , i suppose it could have been a lot worse ...

I asked them to try and ascertain which wheel bearing is kaput as well and replace that while everything is dropped ( thanks for the advice Ian :) ) , so that should hopefully save some labour.

They are good guys at B and M Hampton Hill , not specialists in any brand of car , but good honest general mechanics and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. They do a lot of race and rally prep too , they had a lovely Escort (old skool) rally car on the drive outside.

As a side note, while i was there , they had an RS200 ( you know, the bug eyed monster , covered in vents and spoilers ) owned by some millionarire from Weybridge , it's on a C plate and has done the grand total of 420 miles from new !!!!

It's in because it gets used so little , all the seals in the engine are perishing .....

So , all in all , it could have been a lot worse ! The whale is now SORN'ed and sitting rather sadly in the private parking bays round the back of my house :(

The whale will live to see another day !!! :bannana:

Bad news about the expense and hassle.
But it will be good to hear when the whale is back on the road :)
Good luck mate

At least it's not whale meat yet Howard - so keep that thought in mind. ;)

Good luck with the repair, it could have been a lot worse.:(

Don't worry Howard, you'll soon have it back spick & span and be having a 'whale' of a time....... :)

Oh ..... the puns never end !!!! :bannana:

One final one.

" Whale meet again " :bannana:

That is not a bad result at all, all will be well in the end :) It's never pleasant to cough up money for repairs, but at least she'll live to see another day (well, lots of them!).

Sorry H I've got no whale puns to offer  , they've all been done :o

But, just a thought aside that struck me, didn't you used to have a problem with moisture/water in the boot or somewhere nearby?

Possibly related - might be worth checking once it's all done :)

Will

Hi Will ,

I had the moisture problem in the left hand rear well , which i think we figured out was the condensation from the heat of the back box as it cooled ...

The drain was blocked too ..

I dried it out with a heat gun and some sunny days and ( touch wood ) all seems ok now ....

The well is behind the wheel and the corrosion is in front of it ...

I will get under the car and have a really good look as Dieselman suggests this summer and coat everything in underseal ..

Hope all is well with your new house mate !

H

Good news Howard although it deprives me of a job :o boo hoo. (not to be taken seriously)

See folks. 124's die then reincarnate.

Yep the undersealing/rustproofing sounds like a good idea, I couldn't remember exactly where your water/moisture/leak/condensation was but just thought I'd mention it in case it was related :)

House is getting there slowly, at least there's more daylight now!

See you at a GTG soon  Anything coming up in the near future?

Will

Ah well, its not all bad! its half paid for already! (unless the Bloke in the HSBC call centre thought I said £2.50)

At least its not gone forever!

Hope you are not 'blubbering' too much!!! :D

Sorry to hear it all Howard. Shame you are not nearer or you could have had the 300E for the period (we are away from the 4th until the 16th) so it's going to Ian's for a bit of carpet dirtying servicing and TLC. ;)

P.S. That is a serious offer BTW - I know it is unlikely as you are 'darn sarf and we are 'oop north. But there you have it!

That seems like some very expensive welding...

Would it not be best to get another quote?
