Hi gang,
Right , I have had the bad news .....
Its actually part of the chassis that has rusted out , where the subframe bolts on , the underseal has cracked at some point in the past and allowed water in , which has rusted badly....they will have to drop the rear subframe , diff and everything .
They can do it , for £500 ish , but the even worse news is that they can't do it until the thursday after easter and they would want it for 2 or 3 days ....
Still , i suppose it could have been a lot worse ...
I asked them to try and ascertain which wheel bearing is kaput as well and replace that while everything is dropped ( thanks for the advice Ian ) , so that should hopefully save some labour.
They are good guys at B and M Hampton Hill , not specialists in any brand of car , but good honest general mechanics and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. They do a lot of race and rally prep too , they had a lovely Escort (old skool) rally car on the drive outside.
As a side note, while i was there , they had an RS200 ( you know, the bug eyed monster , covered in vents and spoilers ) owned by some millionarire from Weybridge , it's on a C plate and has done the grand total of 420 miles from new !!!!
It's in because it gets used so little , all the seals in the engine are perishing .....
So , all in all , it could have been a lot worse ! The whale is now SORN'ed and sitting rather sadly in the private parking bays round the back of my house
The whale will live to see another day !!! :bannana:
