MPG E350 vs E320 CDI

Mines the 204bhp, best i got is 47mpg on a 55mile trip with the family on board.

I certainly didn't want to start a Petrol vs Diesel war or have a go at people who have have larged petrol engine cars! I am grateful that we live in a society where we have the choice!

I have been driving diesels for 7 years now and have had the use of, albeit a very nice car, a CLK280. Lovely engine, superbly quiet and smooth but wheres the torque??? Trying to overtake and I had to send a telegram..... my old C270 would have roared past with the rev counter barely touching 2500rpm where I'm still waiting for the CLk to kick down and rev up!!!

Each to their own I guess - as long as it suits your needs.

What is about so many owners of petrol engined cars that they have to knock diesel? Little childish digs about cabs and so on. Do they feel threatened because petrol engine sales are now vanishingly small for most Mercedes models? And why are they so often out of touch with the reality of modern cars. Nobody who has driven an S320cdi with the new V6 can possibly not notice the amazing quietness, smoothness and refinement.

As for performance and price and economy, here are the figures for the 211 E class.
0-62 3.0 litre diesel: - 6.8 seconds.
0-62 3.5 litre petrol: - 6.8 seconds.
Topspeed: both 155 limited.
Cost:- Diesel £36,841 Petrol £37,467

Miles per gallon (combined figure): - petrol 32.5mpg
Diesel almost 20% better at 38.7 mpg

I think your figures speak for themselves. Usually diesel version costs more than the petrol and it can take forever to recoup the cost etc. But not in this case.

Lower cost of diesel car, loads of torque and certainly quick enough.

=

Diesel.

Just pulled up my trip for last 2k 20.2 mpg, wifes i did last week 1250 miles 25mpg.

I remember driving an E320 td very sluggish i thought standing start pedal to the metal and wait and wait for the turbo to spool up, maybe cdi better?

Took a picture yet:)?

Anyone noticed petrol and derv now the same price?

We have sometimes had a loan petrolengined vehicle and when that thing starts up in our garage the fumes are far,far more overpowering than our Cdi vehicle.

We own a 320Cdi and I would guess our annual mileage is lower than what is being discussed. Is it the most practical powered vehicle we could have purchased? Nope... I suggested the E55AMG but that would have been cruel to the car, but it will always be 'Whatever floats your boat'

yes I guess on start-up our diesel is noisier than the petrol equivalent, but to say that it sounds like a typical rattley old diesel is being silly. An old 1.6ltr diesel Ford is far, far,far noisier. Doers it sound as nice as a E55 or E63AMG?:D NO WAY hozeee

unrelated, but could someone confirm the bhp & torque for my engine? December 2005 E280 CDI?

I was told 224bhp but I think its 190bhp, no idea on torque.

The Mercedes website doesn't shed much light.

E280 CDI and E320 CDI both have the 3 litre engine. Though are rated at 190 and 225 respectively.

The answer will be in your handbook.

Given the choice i'd have the petrol engine, I have never driven a diesel which has the feel of a petrol, it's torque is all over too quickly and when you really want to put your foot down you have little left. It feels like you have 90% of the power with 50% of the throttle, when you want that extra shove there is barely anything left.

I'm surprised at the petrol engines mileage figures, it's pretty impressive.

Head says diesel, heart says petrol. Either way both engines have their place and are excellent in their own ways.

Dave!
