MPG!! Why not litres per 100 Miles??!!

I'm going back to a V8 for my daily commute and cover 20,000 a year, that's from my Volvo who's long term 3 year average is 52 mpg

Life's too short :-)

You can only drive so fast so why spend twice as much doing it. I can think of lots of other things to spend money on than fuel, cars, holidays, houses, having a good time.
My current bus does 0-62mph in 7s, 150mph and tonight mpg is 48, even with a bit of exercise.

It will put my fuel bill up about £40 per week. I will recover the increase in cost by buying a car of lower value than I have therefore making it cost neutral over 3 years and putting me in a car that brings a grin to my face everyday

Love the mid range grunt of a diesel hate the noise

You mean the noise of a transverse mounted 4 banger.

Try a six or eight cylinder longitudinal mounted engine and you won't hear it.

I still fancy a CLS 350Cdi. When you floor it not much seems to happen apart from the horizon gets closer, quickly.

Driven loads of them Audi V8 Tdi BMW 530d 535d MB 320 cdi to name a few they are all the same particularly listening from the outside

Those 530d traffic cars South Yorkshire are using don't need sirens you can hear them coming miles away :-)

Seriously it's the noise that's turned me off them after 12 years, must be an age thing but I can't hack it anymore yet SWMBO would not go back to petrol and that's after coming out of a V8 her swap next year will be into a diesel MB for sure

I'd be interested to know how you are listening from the outside when driving along the motorway.

I'm not talking about my perception from inside the car whilst driving more when I'm queuing or listening to other diesels outside whilst queuing

But like for like inside the cabin of every diesel I've driven it's noisier than it's petrol equivalent

Stop/Start function seems to give silent queuing...

In reality, the V6 is plenty quiet enough.

3.35 gallons at say, 30mpg in a petrol. Do you really drive 100 miles per day going to work?
That's 25,000 miles per year commuting...and you still opt for a petrol car...

I drive about 38 miles each way , usually in rush hour traffic , when I must be dropping closer to 25 mpg .

I tried Diesel and didn't like it .

Crikey!! What??!!

Once you take away cars, holidays, houses, having a good time, what else is there? :D

Motorbikes need adding to this thread. Performance, economy, filtering, parking, thrills. They offer a lot to the motoring enthusiast. OK, a slight increase in death/injury, but as above, life's too short to deny some pleasures.

Every year when the nice weather comes around I think about getting a bike again - problem , for me , is that when I had my last bike ( a 125cc ) I could legally drive it on my full car licence . I did a training course , sat my part 1 and had my date for part 2 when the bike lost an oil seal and put a piston through the block . That was the end of the bike and I never sat part 2 .

Now I would have to go right back to CBT and do it all again .

There is nothing like a bike to take the stress out of the daily commute which I did for many, many years (lots of fun riding too).
However, contrary to popular perceptions, riding (bikes, I hasten to add) is not much fun when it is hot weather and wearing leathers or one of those 'technical' suits, IMO.

Back to the OT, there is a generational overlap of two different systems, metric and imperial. Older gits, like me, mostly think in mpg terms. I was at college when we went metric, so then had to convert 6/8d into .34p, the price of a gallon back then, but the whole mile to litre thing means nothing to me! In the same way, I can judge someone's height more accurately in feet and inches than I can in 1 point something metres. It's not a stubborn attitude, believe me, it's just second nature, and I get by!

At a tangent, why do people answer in time, when the question is asked in distance? More often a girlie thing, I've found, but if I ask "how far is so and so town from here?", I usually get "about 20 minutes" or some such! Is that on the bus, walking or driving? How fast do you drive etc?!! Put it to the test!

By the way, ola from Mexico!

Just like more of us can visualise 6 feet rather than 1800mm, we are more familiar with mpg

Also, we are used to a higher number (mpg) meaning better economy, while l/100km is the reverse.

Maybe km per litre would be a better measure - not that I am suggesting even more complication...
