I am a submariner, and a shipmate of mine has had this for years. Sometime in the middle of July 2007 he lost the only key he had to the car. Nobody told him he could go to MB and get one made with the V5 - so - he parked it in the base secure dry carpark (on level 5) and left it.

A month or so ago i asked him if he still had it, and bought it. Gained a receipt and forgot about it until last week. I intended to strip it initially, but upon closer inspection its in good condition. 1986, 2.0 W124 in Gold. MOT ran out Sep 07 and was issued without advisory.

I made a halfhearted attempt to get in, by using wire, tape, didnt work. I RELALY should have just popped a rear quarter glass, but didnt. I went in through the boot after knackering the lock, and was met with the petrol tank. So, I had to go in through the passenger door. one knackered lock later i was in.

I was greeted with loads of junk, a nice watch, some odds and sods, and in the glovebox - bingo. Full history and V5. So the car is currently in the process of being signed over to me. Once it is, i will go to MB and get a key made up.

At the moment im looking to replace the passenger side lock and boot lock. Its secure, you just have to open it with a screwdriver.

It has been so well looked after in its life, it had a private plate on it until 2002 at which point it was assigned the current one, i have paperwork from DVLA to confirm this, so it may be an age related plate.

----------------------------------------

From initial inspection it seems that the car has a power steering fluid leak, which in itself will require to be sorted for MOT. The previous MOT i have shows the mileage on 113000, the car sits now at 117000.

Its going to need the brakes freeing off and from what i can remember the handbrake has been on for all this time. The rear passenger tyre is shot and flat, but when i got into the boot a new spare presented itself to me.

All the arches are spot on - rust patches are developing on the front of the bonnet (where it meets the grille) and on the drivers front arch (pictured). Most of the chrome is pitted and may clean up, will have to see.

Immediately, parts required are:

Passenger & Bootlid locks and key
Possibly new brakes
Audit of power steering system.
Good full service.
Interior clean and freshen.

Below are photos taken yesterday, plan is to await the V5, and get an ignition key from MB and make a valid attempt to get it running. Ill spend the time i have until that happens to clean the engine bay, put some oil in, change the brake fluid and do a coolant change.

Hope you all like, ill keep updated as much as possible. Incidentally this has 12000 less miles on that my daily driver, which is dated 2000/W

It would be good to hear from any Scottish members or people with similar projects :D

Paul.

Ive got myself a full 124 lockset today, and a v5 in my name finally. Took long enough and a few phone calls to MB. Going to go over on tuesday and take the battery off for a charge and try and change all the locks - including the ignition barrel maybe.

Seems like a waste to me to have to go out and buy a key from MB (£26 + petrol to glasgow) only to remove the lock. Will post pictures as i get on with it.

DEFFO GET A NEW BATTERY after a sitting all this time the plates will be sulphated. Buy something with a bit of oomph BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE TURNING OVER THE ENGINE FOR SOME TIME! 75amp hour+ Halfords are selling Bosch silvers now. Drain/ syphon off the old fuel as much as you can and put in some fresh 98 octane stuff. Buy a can of Bradex easy start at HAFORDS also but only use as a last resort. Treat the old girl to a new set of spark plugs also and clean/ dry the inside of the distributer cap if you can get the 2 RETAINING screws off![dont strip the threads if they are heavily corroded. Clean the rotor arm with some light emery. If the electrics seem "funny" try reseating/rotating all the fuses in the fusebox and give all the relays a bit of a wiggle. good luck!

I found a good way to get dizzy cap retaining screws off that wont budge (if your replacing the cap) is to cmash the cap off and get a pair of mole grips on the screws. come straight off.

Thanks for the advice, ill do each one. I have a good battery here anyway so its going to go on soon as.

My main, and primary concern is the brakes and the fact that they will be jammed on so any advice would be well recieved :D

How did he manage to park it up in the car park if he'd already lost the only key that he had to it?

How did he manage to park it up in the car park if he'd already lost the only key that he had to it?

I was wondering that - just assumed that the orginal tale got a bit haywire and in fact he lost the last key after he parked it, which is a bit more likely than losing keys beforehand........ if you see what I mean!

Hi, yes thats right, he parked it up first. My bad england!

Bit of an update. Got the V5 through finally last week and took a trip to MB at Glasgow to buy a key. Apparently they get cut in milton keynes. After presenting my V5 and driving licence, i was lightened by £30.10 for a new key and im currently waiting for their phone call to collect.

So i started on the car itself. The back o/s tyre was totally kaput after being flat for the last few years. So i fitted a new tyre and replaced the trim, levelling out the front end now the back is level.

Took the battery off and charged it out of interest, and it held a charge! As above ive got a lock set waiting so intentions are to get the key, get the battery on. Im going to buy a nice new set of plugs and a rotor arm then get some fresh petrol. Take the filter off, little bit of petrol in the carb and see if it will go.

One mega bonus for me is that the handbrake was never on - never. It activates and releases fine.

So then i moved my attention onto the car itself to make it look as if someone owns it. I found some cleaning products in the boot along with a ice scraper. I physically had to scrape the dirt off with a window wiper after dowsing it all with window cleaner. Then i got a clean cotton rag and redid it all with more spray cleaner. Will do for now but when i get it home ill treat it to a wash and polish.

On a downer someone finally nicked the badge off the front.

Some new photos:

Collected the key today, batterys charging as we speak. Think i might do a 'first start' video and see how lucky i am..

These things dont have an immobiliser on do they? I thought it would be too old.

Hi Paul , I see you are near Glasgow - so am I !

I have a friend with a W124 E200 estate car breaking for spares - it has a full lockset and matching keys along with most other parts you might need . The car was in an accident 3 or 4 months ago but was running well before that so most mechanical parts are good . The wheels are gone but just about everything else is still there . My frined james won't want a lot for any parts as he needs to get rid of the car soon . The car is in Saltcoats , Ayrshire - probably not far from where you are !

Your car is quite an early W124 - the 'D' registration was just about the first year they were available in the UK - Late W123 cars were on 'C' plates and only a very few early W124's had 'C' plates ; 'D' was the first registration year they sold in significant numbers here - the fact that yours is such an early one and still in quite good condition makes it something of a rarity .

Here are a couple of pictures of the car being broken - if you would like anything from it , please post back here as you can't PM yet .

Some of them had immobilisers - either as a factory option or as an aftermarket fitment - most don't .

Thanks for the reply, its a good thing your so close as i probably would need some parts! i intend to get it sorted this week and try to get it running, so i suppose i might be interested in the disks if it still has some on, probably more as i get into the meat of the car.

unfortunately my daily runner decided to knacker its oil cooler so im having to concentrate on that first :(

No problem Paul , once you get to 30 posts on this site , we can exchange contact details via PM .

I tried to PM you but discovered that you can't receive PM either until you reach 30 posts

Regards

Derek .

PS - don't be too long as James was told to get the car moved by end of January !

Looks nice now it's been cleaned!

Hopefully you will have her up and running in no time. I love finding old cars that have sat around for years and bringing them back from the dead so to speak.

Well today wasnt a good day - the key doesnt work in the ignition. Must have been changed in the past.

So now if i cant get the barrel out without completely breaking the entire system im stuck, and the car will be broken. Ive read posts from people who have had success in removing and replacing the barrel with no key so theres hope soon.

On a plus side with a fresh battery on the lights and indicators work, and not a bulb out!

So, my questions are:

1. what are my chances of swapping the barrel with no key to my new one? the new one is complete with the black outer cowling should that be a plus.

2. the steering lock is engaged.. now will me doing this permanently activate it? could i cut or breaking something off to remove the lock completely should i need to.

not a good week for me!

just a thought but whydont you have a look for a secondhand steering colum as i once had an Astra that some "delightfull soul" decided to try and nick rather than replace the lock i changed the complete colum which is only held on by about 4 bolts and the pinch joint at the bottom the whole job took about 30 mins to complete, also you said that you have a power steering leak? if you go to halfords they sell a treatment for leaking power steering units again i have used this on a pajero that i own it saved me from having to replace the steering box for another 3 yrs (the oil reservoir would empty within about 4 hrs before treatment) !! and it's much cheaper and a lot easyer than replacing the rack or pump (got to be worth a try

Thanks for the power steering tip - ill give it a go!

As for the other one, the ignition barrel is located in the actual dash itself, other than the steeing column as you would expect (not sure why) so might not work :(

Paul ,

I'm pretty sure the locks , keys & steering column in the estate car are fine , so if you end up having to brutalise yours , all the bits needed would be there .....

The steering lock/ignition switch projects out from the side of the steering column in behind the dash - take out the instruments and the trim below the dash and all will become clear .

These cars have a steering box , not a rack , and much easier to swap if needed . The treatment that swells the seals is only a temporary fix .

I already sourced a complete set about two weeks after getting the car - i was just hoping that the key from MB would turn first time :(

Ill get these posts up - email me at pwetherhill at gmail dot com?
