'My first SL'

The rollbar only deploys if the system thinks the car is in danger of rolling over. So straight line braking shouldn't do it, but over-enthusiastic cornering could. Of course there's also a small risk with an older car that a faulty sensor etc. may trigger deployment without warning at any time. So as per the handbook the rollbar should always be raised with someone in the back.

Would like a good look at your new car Derek. If it can wait till the end of June a trip up on the hoist might see the gearbox fluid changed as a bonus?

Sounds good - I'd appreciate the chance to have a good look around underneath as well .

I looked into this and although the rear seats were specifically designed by M-B as child seats they (obviously) don't have the current certification so aren't legally recognised as such. Technically you should therefore use a booster, but this would serve no purpose with a lap belt and would arguably be dangerous (because the booster wouldn't sit properly in the 'bucket' type seat, and would raise the child rather close to the rollbar). I have never used a booster seat in the back with ours.

Speaking of the rollbar, you know you have to manually raise this when the rear seats are in use?

I tried the booster seat in last night and it doesn't sit properly , also it is wider than the socket for the lap belt .

This morning , I took Harris to school in it , having made sure the lap belt was properly fitted and adjusted - all seemed fine .

Yes , thanks , I know about the roll bar and would always deploy it when he is in there .

Oh here we go... another (diesel?) SL on the cards.....:thumb:

Good luck with the new car btw Derek...nice engine the 300-24 no wiring harness problems at least.

I've no plans to change mine : I like the 300-24 engine . With my style of driving the mpg instrument seems to be spending most of its time hovering around 30 :) So far , having set the trip counter when I filled up , I have covered about 160 odd miles and the fuel gauge has just dipped below 3/4 .

I went this morning and bought a new 100Ah Bosch S5 battery , oil , genuine MB filter , ordered the fuse maps for both fuseboxes , and the 300SL-24 badge for the bootlid .

Due to the horn push on the steering wheel not working , I'll need to look for another steering wheel - a replacement out of a W124 will probably do , but I'll see if I can find a nice wood & leather one at a reasonable price to set the car off .

If I get more time this weekend I will try to trace the central locking fault .

I've never had any concerns about putting kids in the back of ours. At 7 years old my son has just hit the magic 135cm tall so now doesn't need a booster seat in the front :thumb:

Harris isn't quite 7 ; I need to measure him as not sure how tall !

Last couple of days I just put the booster seat in the front ; this morning , back seat with no booster and roll bar up even though hard top on .

I presume not much strength in the hard top ; I think the well known autobahn crash footage shows it coming off and the roll bar deployed before car lands back on wheels and both occupants step out :D

Yes indeed. The hardtop is aluminium and not structural. My son Max first rode in the front (in a booster seat) when he had just turned 1. January, hence the warm clothes and hard top!

PS Harris is an unusual name ... it's also my middle name (and my son's)!

^It is the storage bag on sale on the 'other side' for £50 I think it is. No mention of a stand and I have no idea if that is a good price or not. Apologies about the link.

The stands are very handy and about £90 on ebay. My roll bar deployed at 30mph when i swerved and braked sharply to avoid a dog. Enjoy your SL ownership, I've had mine for 7 years or so and fully intend to be buried in it. Couple of pics

Space , alas , as we don't have a garage and I doubt SWMBO would take kindly to me storing it in the kitchen :(

Hopefully , when my stockpile of Ponton spares goes , there will be a little more room in my mum's garage ; otherwise I'll have to try and find somewhere at work .

I know the SL shop do bags at a very reasonable price .

It's noticeable how much the roll bar restricts rearward visibility , but a small price to pay for the safety of our nearest and dearest .

On Thursday , I spent an hour or so stripping down the nearside door seat control switch , desoldering then resoldering the circuit board - I'm pleased to report that full functionality has now been restored , and my young son will now be able to sit in the back seat with somewhere to put his legs . I'll need to try him both with and without his booster seat to see which way is safest/most comfortable with just the fitted lap belts for now ; I may look at getting a three point belt for him . If he's sitting within the contours of the fitted seat the lap belt may be enough , although I'm not sure whether the fitted rear seat is a 'child seat' and hence the legality of not using a booster seat ... I guess as long as he's securely restrained and can't fly out in the event of something happening it ought to be OK .

The cable for the switch illumination must be at large within the innards of the door as it wasn't among the loom with the switch connectors - a lot of the trim is loose and the central locking problem may well lie within this door , so the door card will be coming off for inspection and refitting this weekend .

On Friday morning I went into ECP and got a new 100Ah Bosch S5 battery , the old smaller battery was a bit tired and the car now starts much better .

I also got a genuine MB oil filter from the dealer and 10litres of Shell Helix 10w40 : changing the oil yesterday the old stuff was black , thin and very 'runny' ; with 7.5 litres of the new oil in the engine sounds much smoother , although the oil pressure at hot idle has only marginally improved . I purposefully didn't put more expensive oil in as I want to just run it for a week or two to flush it through then will change it again for something better . Even so , the oil pressure is still within spec since MB say it can drop as low as 1 bar at idle without harm , and it always rises as soon as the accelerator is touched . I suppose the sender could be faulty and might be worth replacing .

While at MB Glasgow , I was able to order new fuse charts for the front and rear fuseboxes against the chassis no , these should arrive in a few days . The rear fusebox lid is no longer available , but Carl at W140 parts is advertising a used one in the correct colour so I'm going to order that today .

I was taken aback at the cost of a door mirror glass ( my driver's side mirror has lost some of its silvering ) with ECP wanting more than £200 and Merc £300+ just for the glass . Again used R129 mirrors can be had for £50 or so , although some sellers suggest that W202/210/140 mirror glasses are the same ; I went to one breaker yesterday , who had a solitary S210 in , missing its doors .

I was also looking round for a steering wheel since the horn push on mine doesn't work and a switch has been put in the carpeted panel in front of my right knee ! I'm guessing I need to find a late W124 or W126 with airbag to get a compatible wheel , or maybe a W140 - there aren't so many 129's in breakers and most of the yards round here are closed for the bank holiday weekend .

I do fancy getting a nice wood/leather wheel but want to be sure of compatibility . I'm reluctant to take the existing wheel off just for a look simply because of the time the car has to be left with battery off for capacitors to discharge . I'm also wondering whether the existing wheel is original since it obscures the fuel gauge and the clock - or is that normal ? My wheel is not adjustable .

The other job will be to sort out my audio system , I understand some later cars had rear speakers - presumably in the sides of the rear seating area , but I need to check carefully where it is safe to cut holes and routes for cable runs . I understand there is space under the back seats where I may be able to put amplifiers/DSP unit , the CD changers will have to go in the boot but I don't want to lose any more space than I need to there ; I also need to order a new aerial as the old one is knackered - was looking round the breaker yesterday for a Hirschmann but nothing to hand .

I have largely driven the car quite sedately and have been rewarded by seeing 200 miles on the trip counter with just over 1/2 tank remaining and now on 300 miles with just over 1/4 showing .

However , yesterday , just to see what it would do , and alone in the car , on a straight and clear stretch of road I floored it from about 40mph : it kicked down to 2nd and took off rapidly , with 90 mph coming up very quickly before I backed off . Worryingly , there was an alarming and very loud thump from the back when I did this - so I will need to look at propshaft couplings , subframe bushes etc . However , it doesn't happen in normal driving so I will just resume my normal sensible driving for now .

The saga continues .
