My spare key won't work

Got my 1998 C200 a week ago and last night decided to try the spare key it didn't work.
I've changed the batteries and now get a red light when I press a button but the key won't either open/close the locks or more importantly start the car.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I suspect it not the correct spare key. if its the black IR key then only a dealer can supply you with correct one for your car but they are expensive, about £230.

Having read your reply I have looked at the actual key and found that your were correct it was the wrong key
ive spoken to the garage and they appear to have mixed up the spare keys of the mercedes they have for sale .
going in on Saturday to hopefully pick up the right key.
