My W124 300TE AMG - Restoration!

Can't see the issue - the W124 gets very warm on sunny days - better a good tint than the aircon on full blast?

In that case don't paint it black...30C warmer inside than a white car on a sunny day.

Silver is best...see it really is cool...

So even more reason to put in tints if it is black.

Next...

Tints are must have for me. Having previously been on the mind set that they make you look like a drug dealer, the benefits of a cooler car (temperature wise), preventing fading of interior wood and leather and better security from thieving scroats not easily seeing in far out weigh any downside. Done properly they even look pretty good.

Cars getting there Jay and looking fab already. Correct me if I am wrong but did the car not have rear OEM window blinds, hence no need for tints ?

It is very noticeable how much warmer dark-coloured estates are than silver or white ones

The W124 also suffers from heat soak in the heater assembly - when you start up with a hot engine the first 30 secs of air is scorching and the poor a/c has to pull that heat out again before the interior starts to be cooled. That's one instance where climate control scores over aircon

Trust me.. I can definately vouch for that!

Well you haven't half cheered me up, Nick: I thought mine was broken!

Ann yes that's another thing I have to sort...need to convert it to r134 first so I can service it.

Actually let me be a bit more precise: I don't think it's heat soak from the engine compartment to the heater, though that may be part of the problem

I think the heat in the cooling system soaks into the heater assembly when the engine is turned off. There are three pipes to a standard heater assembly - they will be two feeds via the Duovalve and one exit, or one feed and two exits via the Duovalve, depending on which way the water flows. Either the Duovalve defaults open and allows hot water to work its way through the heater matrix or it back feeds in through the exit(s)

Someone with more knowledge than me could engineer a non-return system to stop the backfeed and/or hold the Duovalve closed for a preset time to stop the hot water entering the matrix

There are very few meaningful upgrades you could make to a W124 but I think this is one

One feed, two exits and it does default open.

Hi jay,

absolutely brilliant job you are doing (or having done).

Only just come across the thread, but have loved reading it.

Lovely looking car and well worth the work, I’m sure she will be a credit to you when finished.

We salute you. :thumb:

May I ask, when they under sealed the arches after the cutting and welding, did they do any prep/priming, of the bare metal? Or was it straight on with the under sealed?

Am having similar work done to mine and want to adopt the best practice in this tricky area.

Regards. R

HI, They use red oxide primer first (I think thats the name) then they covered it in shultz, then waxoyl the entire area.... I think the picture was the shultz.
